Well done, and well-deserved, Lorine! You are a leader in responsible
websites and a very educational email-list. Right, take a day off and
read a detective novel ..
Congratulations,

Belle River is a town in Essex County as the previous respondent said.
It is also currently a parish in the Roman Catholic diocese of London
(their archives at 1070 Waterloo St N, London ON N6A 3Y2). The diocese
of London was created in 1856. Prio
Hi! Lorine
We are very proud of you. Your Olive Tree Site is a delight and has been a
wonderful source of good and accurate information for people like myself in
the USA seeking genealogy records on our Canadian Ancestors, our Dutch
Ancestors and many others. An Award is well deserved, but it is very
important that we personally thank you for your hard work and recognize all
that you have done for us.
Our heartfelt Thanks

This is interesting, but doesn't seem to apply to land deeds
in Ontario (Upper Canada). Deeds I have seen are usually
witnessed by neighbours and friends.
I think it's always best to consider the context of the times
and place (geography) before attempting to apply a blanket
rule. Upper Canada was settled first by Loyalists who fled
their native land. They acquired their land in UC rather late
compared to the USA (our settlement date was ca 1783;
parts of the USA had been settled for almost 200 yea

Lorinne I agree!
I believe this must be considered as a practice particular to
Minnesota only. However, it would be interesting to discover if
other States (or Provinces) held similar routines at any time.
Perhaps someone else will have further information to add.
It is difficult to imagine this being a standard procedure across
the country.
Close relatives were usually too many miles away to be considered.
Certainly within my research relatives witnessed very little.
Witnesses were most often persons
Well, lets put down our study and diggings and give Lorine a great big, way
to go. I bet when she started out, she never envisioned her site to be what
it is. My word, she has done a lot, and I'm quite sure that we Canadians are
ever so grateful for Lorine keeping us in line and up to date.
Thank you Lorine, if you could stand up and take a bow for us, you would
hear applause that goes from ocean from ocean and our southern neighbours
love you to.

I have published a History on the family of Henry (b. circa 1748, in America) and Sarah Jackson nee Clute (b. 1749 Kingston, New York). This family started out on a farm near Trenhausik, Albany County, New York. Henry fought with the British and was granted land as a United Empire Loyalist in Edwardsburg Township (near present day Prescott, Ontario) in 1783. He moved to Mountain Township, Dundas County some 18 years later. Son James (m. Hannah Dorin) also moved there from Edwardsburg Township with his fami

Dear List,
I had the great fortune to find the following marriage on a web page
suggested by another lister:
24 May, 1837, Banns, James Piggott, of the city of Toronto, bachelor and
Lavinia Garbutt of the Township of Toronto, Spinster. Witnesses: Charles
Piggott, Mary Garbutt.
Does anyone recognise these families?
