My great-grandfather Joseph BREYarrived in New York May 23, 1867 with his family, leaving from Bremen according to Ancestry.com. They have him coming on a ship named Helmerth Timouis. For the life of me, I can't find anything about this ship. I even contacted a maritime museum and they suggested I had it spelled incorrectly. Someone thought that it might be Simonis instead of Timouis. I printed out the page from the list which gives the ship name, captain, etc., but I simply can't decipher the name
Hi Cathy,
From what I've learned, unless your ancestor kept a journal or wrote her
accounts at a later date, you may never the details of her voyage, but you
can research voyages of the same time period. The accounts you find will
give you some idea of what your ancestor experienced.
Hope this helps.

So where do I start looking, when I don't know where he sailed from? He preached a sermon in London May 30, so I presume it was a British port. But that's all I know. Any ideas?

Ships Manifests (passenger lists) were required by law at the port of
departure. They were lists of *all* passengers on board. Citizenship had
no bearing on whether or not a name was recorded.
So your ancestor will be on a list somewhere...
With a name that can be easily misinterpreted or mispelled, I wouldn't
rely

You should be able to find what you want on microfilmed
lists.
For a complete list of film numbers for ships going to
Mass. after 1820, see

Find your date (year, month, day if known) and write down
the NARA or Family Hi
The following is all I can find on the immigration of my grandmother. Can
someone tell me how I can get some more information? I would like to find out
more details of her voyage to America, but this is all I can find at Ancestry.

I have an ancestor, N.S. BASTION/BASTIAN, who was a Methodist missionary in Liberia. In late June or early July of 1850, he returned to the US and landed in Boston, according to a letter I have a copy of (June/July is hard to read). But I have plenty of evidence that it was within that time frame. Here is my question. He was a US citizen. Someone has gone through about 8 ships lists arriving in Boston during that time and can't find him. By 1850, did the lists ONLY include immigrants? Or did they also inclu
