Joseph Johnston's Report of the Battle of Fair Oaks (Seven Pines)
RICHMOND, VA., June 24, 1862.
SIR: Before the 30th of May I had ascertained from trusty scouts that Keyes' corps was encamped on this side of the Chickahominy, near the Williamsburg road. On that day Maj. Gen. D. H. Hill reported a strong body immediately in his front. On receiving this report I determined to attack them next morning, hoping to be able to defeat Keyes' corps completely in its more advanced position before it could be re

Hello List Members,
Our List Administrator, Pat, has had to step down. I know that you share my appreciation of all the work she's done for the list.
My name is Nancy Brister and I will be your new List Administrator.
I have a strong interest in the list because my g-grandfather, Josiah Garrett, fought in the Battle of Seven Pines. He served in the 12th MS Inf Reg.
I look forward to being your List Administrator. You'll find my e-mail address at the bottom of the messages I post. Pl
During the early part of the War a great many families made the effort to
come to Virginia to collect the bodies of their soldier loved ones.
Unfortunately, many more were buried where they died on the field. There
were fewer community graveyards than there are now; most families had a
grave site on their property. Many, many of these family sites have been
destroyed by development, vandalism, and nature. I sincerely hope that you
all will be able to find the burial sites that you are looking for, but,

I thought Swift Creek was on the south side of the James River.
Seven Pines is on the north side, east of Richmond.

They say a picture's worth a thousand words and I found a photo of Hollywood Cemetery that illustrates Lynda's point.....and this was only one cemetery. The board "markers" couldn't have lasted very long. Also, I understand that many were buried in mass graves with no markers to identify individual soldiers. In some cases, the best hope was that a friend would write to the soldier's family and tell them where he was buried.

Elsie and everyone,
I find that they've moved to a new website. I tracked it down through
a Confederate Burial Search Index site: Confederate Cemetery Lists:
http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Grounds/7235/ (an excellent
resource I've used many times). At that site, I clicked on Virginia:
http://confederatecemetery.0catch.com/Virginia.htm and scrolled down
til I found the Old City Cemetery, Confederate Section, in Lynchburg:

Beth,
I believe I remember someone mentioning Hollywood
Cemetery in Richmond as a burial site of Confederate
soldiers killed at Seven Pines.
Does anyone on the list know of any other possible grave

County, Virginia) (May 31-June 1, 1862)
Thought some of you might find this excerpt interesting:
"The avidity with which an impoverished Confederate might pounce upon the riches left in the wake of a Federal defeat, as well as the unhappy consequence of over-enthusiasm, is evidenced by an entry in a Tennessean's diary following the Battle of Seven Pines:
'I awoke quite early yesterday morning and everything seemed very quiet. I went over the field seeing what I could see. Here were Sutlers' tents, filled with luxuries, oranges, lemons, p
