Hi Vince,
I'm a little confused......the fellow I show with Mark FINKS in the 1870
census that is 15 yrs. old, is Porter MARTON -- not FINKS. Were you under the
impression that this was Porter/Parker FINKS?
I found Parker FINKS in 1870 with wife Martha living in Madison Co. He's
indexed as Porter, but after looking at two different images for the page, I
think the name is definitely Parker.

Hi Vince,
I didn't get any results for Parker FINK/FINKS any further back than the
1880 census where he's in Madison Co. with wife Martha and 4 children, including
the 1 mo. old "Channy".
Parker Finks 30, VA
Martha Finks 30, VA
James Finks 15, VA
William Finks 8, VA
Lelia Finks 2, VA
Channy Finks 1M, VA
However, I think I found Parker indexed as Porter FINK in the 1870 index.
Looking at the census image, the name looks like Parker to me and little

Michael,
I couldn't find J.W. in the ancestry.index under the name Siposs or Sellers,
but I got a clear image and J.W. is living alone.
The name looks like it is written with the letter "f" in front of the double
consonants as was
common in that time frame, but I can't say for certain that the name is
Sellers. It looks like
the following:
J.W. Sifsofs, 27, Jeweller, value of real estate: $1000, value of
personal estate: $10,000,
born VA
Do you know what the occupation of your J.W. SE
You are right. They are not the same person. I wonder if they are
related at all - it seems mind-boggling that they would not be.
One is Mark Franklin Finks, and the other is Mark Fisher Finks.

Folks,
I've learned much.
Now I'm trying to track down Nic(e)y Ann BUMBR(E)Y
in 1870.
She is listed with her husband and kids as being at
Madison County, VA, in 1880.
Daniel BUMBRY - aged 44
Nicy Ann BUMBRY - aged 30
Lewis BUMBRY - aged 13
Rosa BUMBRY - aged 11
Anna BUMBRY - aged 9
All are listed as born in Virginia, though I'm not so certain.
I think sometimes a lazy enumerator would just love to make
ditto marks.
Here's a bit of the history of the BUMBRY name. Apparently
it was English, and was BU
Hi Vince,
I jumped to a conclusion without checking out the facts. I have to revise
my suspicion that
the 22 yr. old Mark F. FINKS living with Lewis FINKS in the 1860 census, was
the son of the
41 yr. old M.F. FINKS in Greene Co. in the 1860 census.
I should have taken a look at the 1850 census first, before I jumped to
conclusions.
The 1850 census for Lewis FINKS shows a 12 yr. old Mark F. FINKS in the
household so now I'm
suspecting that the 22 yr. old Mark in the 1860 census is actually Le
This find of TRINKS is a bit o genius! Good find. I don't doubt
you've got it. And the 11 year old would be Parker. He was
born in 1849, I believe. So he was the slave of Lewis, right?
Lewis was the father of Mark Franklin FINKS, born 1838. Now
I doubt very much that Mark ever owned Parker. He could have
in 1860, but I doubt it - just the overseer, methinks.

Hi,
I am trying to help a black friend of mine find more of his family.
He told me of a family member named Channie. I found out
that Channie's father was named Parker FINKS. Now Parker
is readily found in a number of census back to 1870. His
age is such that he was probably born circa 1850. So he
should be possible to find for 1860!
But that was a time of slavery, and he may be listed in some
strange fashion, if at all. It may be that if he was a slave
(likely), his master's name was FINKS or FINK,
Hi...
Of course I remember you.
Now I think you are on to something, and I have learned more
from the time of the original post.
I had thought that Parker FINKS might have a connection to
S. H. FINKS (Simeon Hamilton FINKS it turns out), since he
was on the same page in census once. But the age is wrong.
They were both approximately the same age. If Parker was
sired or owned originally by a FINKS, it more likely may have
been Simeon's father, Lewis FINKS. Now Lewis was a farmer,
and had an overseer on
Marilyn,
Can you email me a copy of the image for TRINKS? This is the
closest thing to date proving a connection of Parker to a specific
FINKS.

Hello Vince,
Looks like you might be able to add BOMSEY? to your list of surname
variations...at least the given names are pretty close.

I'd like to request a lookup for the 1860 Census in Albemarle County. The name is indexed as "J.W. Siposs, age 27" and is on Series: M653, Roll: 1331, Page: 359.
I have been looking for "John Wiklif Sellers" forever and a day, and I came across the abovementioned census page listing a J.W. Siposs, age 27. However, in trying to see if "Siposs" was instead "Sellers", I can't find "Siposs" anywhere on the page. The bottom of the page either is in horrendous shape or it was photocopied poorly. I viewed it
