2. CHARLES Oldham & wife Sarah of Lunenburg Co., VA 1774 [1]
Can anyone on this list indicate the origins of Charles Oldham and his wife Sarah of Lunenburg Co., VA ca 1774? Apparently, Charles is somehow related to Leroy Oldham. (It seems to me that a Leroy Oldham had links to some of the colonial Northern Neck counties of Virginia. Correct me if I am wrong.) Are these Oldhams linked to those Oldhams who later migrated to the area around Louisville, KY? Lunenburg Co., VA Deed Bk 12-362 To Thomas Chambers & Charles Hamlin, Gentlemen of L[unenburg
3. more on problem area [1]
I have several sources showing Sarah J. IDEN marrying (1) Mager (or Major) Hamilton McARTOR, (2) Major McARTHUR, or (3) Hamilton McARTHUR. The problem seems to stem from Thomas Hickerson McArtor marrying his first cousin, thus we think he changed his name to McArthur. The family Bible shows the birth of Thomas' father as Major Hamilton McArtor. Thomas was born in Loudoun and Sarah in Fauquier according to Marriage Register No. 7, page 42. They also had two marriage dates--this one being 26 Sep 1865. I

7. The 1787 Census of Virginia [1]
For those subscribers who are fortunate enough to live in Virginia, Washington, DC (DAR Library), or near a large genealogical library anywhere in the US, one of the most valuable resources for a genealogist to use when searching for a male living ca 1787 in Virginia is to examine the so-called 1787 Census of Virginia. Two dedicated women, Netti Shreiner-Yantis and Florine S. Love took the MANY personal property tax lists for MOST (not all) counties in Virginia in 1787 and compiled these valua

9. Richard Rosser of the area around Culpeper or Fauquier Co. [1]
I was doing a google.com search for Richard Rosser, whose wife was Judith Kemper. The e-mail address attached to a timeline [family group sheet, more accurately] gave an address with the surname Burgess and an unfamiliar server. In the event this person is subscribing to one of these rootswebs, I have this message for him/her. The bullet item is cut and pasted from the information about the Rosser family. 11 ii. 12. Re: [VACULPEP] Valentine Papers, Vol 1-4 [1]
I find Valentine Papers are useful for getting some excellent clues. Try to follow up any clues with films of original records. You will be richly rewarded. Incidentally, many of the books published some years ago under the auspices of the Virginia Deparment of Transportation pertaining to road orders of various counties are now online. 13. Re: [VACULPEP] Winchester Relative During American Revolution [1]
Excuse me for intervening about trying to find a person with Revolutionary War service, particularly in the Winchester area of Virginia. This concerns finding persons who MAY have been involved in the American Revolution. By no means, will this e-mail cover ALL you need to know about tracking down your Revolutionary War ancestor. These are only suggestions. First, please recognize that not every person involved as a Patriot during the Revolution has been recognized by NSDAR. Why? Several
14. Banns of Marriage & Other English Traditions & Practices [1]
Someone on the list VASouthside rootsweb list asked about banns of marriage. This practice was common in England. I have not seen any indication of such practice in colonial Virginia, but perhaps I have not searched far and wide enough. Note that in England, it was only in later years that this practice had to be recorded in the parish registers. However, my maternal grandmother was born in Kent in 1872, and I found some of her Suffolk ancestors had a banns of marriage in the parish in which
15. Re: [VA-NORTH] Another Great Article by Michael John Neill [1]
Michael Neill's advice to read some documents backward follows closely the practice in printing when proofreading a complex scientific or legal article. In language filled with repetitive or unfamiliar spellings, often a proofreader would catch an error--even after that proof had already been read by another reader. Good article.
