Hi Everyone:
I am new to the Carroll County, Virginia list. I recently found a reference
that indicates my O'Neal ancestors may have been from Carroll County,
Virginia. I am looking for any information on the family of my Great-Great
Grandfather, Daniel Grover O'Neal and Great-Grandfather, James Remuel
O'Neal, born Nov. 18, 1861 in Raleigh Co., WV. I understand from family
history that the family was part of the first settlers in the Raleigh Co.,
WV area. I believe Daniel was the son of Jesse (who wen

n the early 1900s there was an incident in Carroll Co. involving several
members of the Allen family. Mr. Alderman, in his book The Settlements,
mentions two men who settled early on in Carroll named William Allen. Could
one of these two Williams be the ancestor of the men who were accused in the
famous court case later in Carroll Co.?

Although this isn't a song but rather a poem based on Hamlet's "To be or not
to be" speech, it depicts the very difficult position of the loyalist when
pressured by fellow colonists to sign an oath of fidelity to the Continental
Congress. As it shows, some became very reluctant "rebels."

To sign, or not to sign? That is the question,
Whether 'twere better for an honest man
To sign, and so be safe; or to resolve,

Hello to all,
I don't usually do this, but I was sent this wonderful website about
people of the Blue Ridge and just know all of you will enjoy it. There
are also articles on surrounding counties and WV. If you have ever lived
near these beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains or have had ancestors come
from this area, this site will mean so much to you. Be sure to check out
the genealogy section.
Enjoy

I have found a family tree that a relative started several years ago. In this tree she states that Jackson Payne was "buried at the Eldridge Payne homeplace off of the Blue Ridge Parkway" Does anybody know where the Eldridge Payne homeplace is?

Enjoyed Mr. Roberts comments re. the Revolutionary War. Most people are not
aware that the majority of the citizens were not for the revolutions. I have
read there were about 30% fervently in favor of the Revolution. Except for
Benjamin Franklin, the leaders of the Revolution, such as Thomas Jefferson,
were less than thirty years old.

troops at Valley Forge were Irish. They had a visceral hatred of England and

Hi List,
I hope that someone can answer this question for me. Some may believe it has
nothing to do with genealogy but others might. My question is is that I was
just in Galax last week to attend the funeral of my great-aunt. I found one
floral tribute quite interesting and it had a children's telephone on it
with ribbons hanging down and on these ribbons it said: "Jesus called and
Mommy answered". Now, I can understand being called by Jesus to come back
home but, what is the origin of using the childrens

Yep.
But sorting out exactly who they were is difficult especially if only
officers were mentioned with 200 privates.
Coming from simple families is difficult to sort out.
