Well, JoLee, I'm surely glad to hear from you -- I thought you'd taken the baby dog and disappeared into the wilds :-)
I'm not familar with Sandy Clay Road, and I couldn't find it on our current county map. I've heard of Locust Grove but that's about it. I'm tied up for the next few days but if you can wait I'll take a drive to Drakes Branch (or Duck Puddle as it's referred to here :-) and see what I can find. Is there anything in particular you want to know about Locust Grove, or just if it's still sta

Dear Eddie,
I have been doing VAUGHAN research for the past 15 years. My husbands
3rd Great Grandmother was Martha C. VAUGHAN, daughter of Nicholas VAUGHAN.
Martha C. married Lewis Yancey BEADLES in Charrlotte Co. in 1802. I have a large

I don't have deed records of Charlotte County, but Charlotte was formed
from Lunenburg, and it appears through 1764 his land transactions were on
Twitty's Creek. You can check Topozone for that area, and you could go to

Thank you. The list of Freed Negroes is where I finally recognized my
family, even though I have been familiar with the list for many years. I was thrown
off by the use of the surname, Lindsey. Family lore had always used the
surname, Chapman. There are references to a Fanny Chapman in the list, but I
cannot find her in the census records. Kay

JoLee is right here!
I changed my email address to get rid of spam, and as hard as I worked to
notify my friends, I think I lost more friends than I did spam.
I discovered I hadn't received the VACharlo-L mail for some time, so went
to the Archives to see what was up. That is where I discovered your
messages. Kathy, please resubmit your information.
I was just getting ready to email you to see what you know about Drakes
Branch and the old home "Locust Grove" there.

Kay,
The book "Charlotte County, Rich Indeed" contains a long list of Freed
Negroes, transcribed from county records. There are several Chapman and
Lindsey index entries to that material. Some are children of Nancy
Lindsey, some children of Fanny Chapman. If you have not seen this
information, I will be glad to summarize it for you.

Anyone?
I have reference to "Sand Clay Road" in Drakes Branch on the 1920
Census. Does anyone know where it is or was?
Also, does anyone have current information on the home "Locust Grove" shown
in Charlotte County Rich Indeed, p. 390, as being .1 mile east of State
Route 637, .16 mile southwest of the Town of Drakes Branch?
Thanks so much,
JoLee

Does anyone have access to Charlotte County records, especially will books and / or Deed books from the 1800s? I'm trying to determine the location of land owned by an Abraham Vaughan. Abe died in Charlotte County in late 1795 or early 1796. Here is his will:

This union took place prior to any law regarding birth records. Their children
used Lindsey as their surname.
Does any one have a suggestion as to how to go about identifying the
