1. Need advice to find out about a death/grave on private property [1]

I have a friend who lives in Chesterfield county (in 'Richmond', not in the country). He has found a grave on his property. The man was born in 1904 and died in 1944. I have tried every possible spelling of first & last name trying to find him in the 1910, 1920, 1930 census. No luck. Would he go to find a death record at the county courthouse in Chesterfield County? Thanks.
