Hey Listers, let me join the ranks of Debra and Faye in praising and giving
kudos to Miss June for all of her help....... We can all seek to emulate her
selflessnes in giving to us info on our Virginia Ancestors (if we can share the
info) and also to help a novice in genealogy. God knows how frustrated we
can get trying to solve these riddles and find a source to boost us over another
hurdle. Only to find another..
Several years now June has helped me in my quest for info on Ware Long and

I wish I knew Rebecca! John Lane is my brick wall that I can't get past. It
is possible that he is the missing John Lane from the Rev. Tidence Lane
family of Baltimore. If he were, then my Lane's could be traced back several
hundred years. Without proof, I must continue looking.

Regarding Rev. George STROTHER, b. 2/14/1776 and his wife, Mary Duncan, b.
2/27/1776. They married in Culpeper Co., VA on February 18, 1796. I have
lots of records on their lives, families.
At 18, he volunteered as a soldier, later (1797) came with James Duncan to
Bourbon Co., KY, then in 1802 to Trimble Co., KY, then went to Madison Co.,

Dear Listers,
Recently I saw on one of these lists a discussion about what survivors can
do when a researcher dies and he leaves behind a pile of papers. In the
case I am concerned with, the researcher was 90, researched a family line
all his life and also published a very good, hard bound book.
Options are several: give the papers to a local library, give the papers to
a nationally recognized library such as LDS or the one near South Bend,
Indiana which I can't recall right now, or give the papers to a
Dear June,
Was this for Lanes in Surry Co., Va or Surry/Wilkes Co., North
Carolina? (My server has been acting up again and did not get messages
until late.) Thank you for your help.

Can someone tell me how I could get a roster of the soldiers in this Revolutionary unit? Has a history of the unit been written?

Found a John Lane:
Katherine Jett and her (late) husband William Jett, mentioned (1766) in the
will of her father, Willoughby Newton (died 1767) of Westmoreland Co., who had
given them land in Loudoun County, Va., where William Jett died in 1762.
Katherine later married John Lane of Loudoun COunty, Va.

Dear Georgia and Listers,
I am watching the Duncan info you are listing. I didn't know about their
Culpeper connection. I am a Pryor descendent whose members lived in Henry
Co., KY. Some still do. And I know we have lots of Duncan cousins, too, of
the "William Duncan the Elder" line. I grew up with one of them and never
knew he was a cousin until fifty years later.

KDale I have Thomas Brown in class 17. He was called for 3mo and stayed for
another 3mos. Returned home and recalled for the seigh on Yorktown. He was
there when Cornwallis surrendered. Do you have anymore info on him.?

Just an FYI to the list that "Seasons of War: The Ordeal of a Confederate Community, 1861-1865," by Daniel E. Sutherland is up for auction at ebay. Currently, there are no bids and the starting bid is $3. It's a great book for those researching Culpeper lines that lived in the Culpeper environs during the Civil War.
I have NO financial interest in this transaction; I simply ran across it searching ebay.

Dear Ralph and Listers,
The Bruces in Culpeper--
George Bruce of Stafford married Mary Stubblefield of Culpeper. They had
sons Henry Bruce (b. 1777) and George Stubblefield Bruce (b. ca 1776).
Henry Bruce kept a diary. In a part of it he mentioned going to KY in 1818
to see a favorite cousin named Elizabeth Valandingham (Betsy Bruce Drake
Vallandingham). I have seen a pix of a portrait of Henry Bruce somewhere.
Betsy Bruce Drake apparently had a mother, Anne Bruce, who was a sister to
George Bruce an
Dear Ralph,
By chance, would it be possible your John Lane was born Isle of Wight
County, Va.? Did he have a brother named Levin Lane? My late husbands
Lane family moved to New Hanover County, North Carolina by early 1800's.
Could this be a possibility?

I am not sure if the Duncan records I have found are the same as those that
you mention however , I have found some great Duncan records , I have found
some great connections in the deed s etc listed for the family as the
records are so complete and the Duncans of Randolph co NC, so close to my
Poe and Caviness families (as well as others )that I thoroughly enjoy
reading them, although I don't know of a connection, I suspect one .I have
found several Duncan signatures on caviness documents again thanks fo
Does anyone have any information on the Stubblefield family of Culpeper
County. I have a Stubblefield family starting in NC in 1784 but have not
gotten any further back. I do know that they came from VA and intermarried
with Rice's and Looney's. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi,
Thanks to every one posting the Revolution information in Culpepper!
My 6 times great grandfather David McCarty was drafted in Culpeper per his
Rev. war pension application but I have been unable to find any Culpeper
records mentioning his name. I believe he was drafted there between 1780
and 1781. He had been residing in Loudoun County so am not quite sure how
he came to be drafted in Culpeper. Any help or ideas would be greatly
appreciated!
Deborah
