I am looking for information on a James Owens. I have been told that
this is the name of the father of Almareen A. Owens (b. @1876) who
married Mary Bowman in 1893 in Dickenson Co. Almareen and Mary appear
in the census in Dickenson in the early part of the 20th century. Does
anyone have any information on James and his family/ancestry? Thank
you!

Wondering if in ordering death certificates if it is better to make the
request to the Division of Vital Records in Richmond or is it better to
write the Dickenson Co. Courthouse? I do have the forms and am aware of
costs, just wondering which might be the best and if the county courthouse
even does so? Thanks John Blair

Hi John,
I believe the Dickenson County Clerk's Office would refer you to Richmond,
with one exception. There is one 1880 Mortality Census book still retained
in the Dickenson County Clerk's Office. I don't know why this one was
retained when all else was sent to Richmond in the 1950s (I think that's the
right date) but it is there for I've seen it. Perhaps they retained the one
from 1880 because that is the date Dickenson was formed. This record is a
