Dear Robert,
The info that I have on the Halifax Co., VA Olivers was researched by my
great-aunt, Virginia Oliver Bell, before 1960. She did it "the old-fashioned way",
by paying a researcher in Halifax Co. to look up in the records. I fell heir
to her work when she died in 1972. She didn't know the wife of Nickerson
Oliver, although the name Durrett came up. I don't think that she could prove the
connection, so I didn't use the Durrett name. And, of course, with a young
family to feed, I couldn't pa
Greetings,
Can anyone give me an idea of the distance & travel time between these two

Hi Jeanne,
Let's talk about your, NICHERSON OLIVER who married VICEY JOHNSON on July 31, 1791, in Halifax Co., VA...... and the NICHERSON OLIVER, who married JUDITH HOLT, on May 6, 1800, in Halifax Co., VA.. Are these two OLIVER men, "one and the same", (or not)? Also.....do you suppose that, "VICEY" JOHNSON, was actually, 'LUCY" JOHNSON? I see on Halifax Co., Virginia topographical map, the following families living very close to each other along the Halifax Co., VA. and Person Co., NC. bord

Mimi,
I'm curious about this Halifax Co., Virginia topographical map you mention.
What time frame would it encompass? My 4th g-grandfather, Archibald
McMillan, doesn't show up in Halifax Co., Va. until the 1813 when he appears
on a tax roll. He's enumerated on the 1820 census in the Mary(something?)
district of Halifax, Va.

Eleven years after Halifax was formed from Lunenburg Co., there was this deed executed and filed in Bedford Deed Book 2, p. 359. Bedford was the 2nd division of Lunenburg in 1754.

Jeanne,
Thanks for the information, but I have absolutely no idea at this time.
All we know about our Olivers is that William Oliver gave in the 1850 & 1860
census that he was b. in NC abt. 1775. Halifax Co VA is on the NC/VA border
and there are numerous deed and court records of the residents

Dear Sharon,
Well, my Nickerson Oliver did have a son, William, but as you (and Mimi)
said, there is no proof that he was YOUR William. My William married Vicey
Johnson on 13 July 1791 in Halifax Co., VA. That is the only date that I have for
him. Thanks for the reply.

There are two Richard Caviness in the 1860 Iowa Census. Do you
have them? Are they your ancestors? If so, try going back with
them in the censuses and you might run into your Richard of 1755.

Good Morning, Halifax County,
Here we go again.....back to the ol' search for the parentage of my, "well hidden", G.G.G.G.Grandfather, WILLIAM OLIVER, (1773-1863), husband of PHOEBE STOVALL, she being the daughter of BARTHOLOMEW STOVALL and SUSANNAH OWEN, of Halifax County, VA.. It has always been stated, (and/or assumed), that Phoebe's sister, ELIZABETH STOVALL, married William Oliver's "brother", however, being the curious natured, somewhat nosey gal that I am leads me to ask the followi

Dear Jeanne,
I saw your posting on this group and your ancestor's name caught my eye.
I believe your Nickerson Oliver (1755-1807) is actually a son of
Nicholson/Nickerson Oliver who died in Caroline County, Virginia before
August, 1781 when his estate was probated there. This Nicholson Oliver
(most common spelling) was born abt. 1704 in King William County,
Virginia (said-to-be), s/o of John Oliver (1676-1748). His wife was said
to be a Durrett, but I have seen no proof of that yet. His children were
