Can anyone help me place the location of the Thompson Graveyard
as described in the following message?
A California cousin visited the Montgomery Co., Va., area in
April, looking for the site of Archibald Thompson's homesteads in
the mid-1700s. We are descendants of Archibald, b. 1736, and Mary
Elswick, b. 1741, who lived at various locations in Montgomery
Co. until their emigration to Kentucky in 1797. (See his diary,
index and transcript by Lula Hankins Hunter at

I am a descendant of Jonathan STEPHENS, son of Peter STEPHENS, Jr. and
Mary CHRISMAN. Jonathan married Susannah THOMPSON, daughter of George
THOMPSON. I would love to exchange information with anyone on these
lines. I have a lot of STEPHENS information, but not a lot on the
THOMPSONs. Does anyone know Susannah's mother's birth surname? Thank
you.

Apologies to all for not addressing the list correctly. I had a help question
that I thought the
list administrator would get. The novice is showing through. To all that
replied to my help request, thank you and here is what I wanted to know... if
there was an obituary lookup for Radford, VA...I have two relatives that died
there and I thought that the obituary information would give me new leads.
1) Henry Dixon, died 7 Nov. 1941
2) Alpha B. (Donahoe) Dixon, died 31 Jan 1947
Again, thanks for your con

Joan,
If you can find out, I'll dance at your wedding.
This John's son, Archibald, b. 1736, wrote in his diary "Farewell
Sweet Ireland Wherein I Was Bred." But where the family
disembarked is still unknown.

Hi Marsha!
I thought you and maybe some other Montgomery County researchers might be
interested in this. The genealogy society in Evansville, Indiana, published
a book of letters written to and by a Mr. Turman who lived in California in
the 1940s-50s. It also includes Mr. Turman's newspaper columns that spanned
about twenty years if my memory serves me. It is FULL of Turman and Harbour
history and several of the families who married in. I know that it includes

Is anyone else researching families who were in Montgomery County living on
the West Fork of Little River, by 1750 or so? I know this is in modern Floyd
County. I am particularly interested in the Spurlock family and their
neighbors.
Did Anthony Pate marry Nancy Spurlock? Shelor? Sherlock? I've seen it
transcribed all three ways, but on microfilm it looks like Sherler or some
such to me.
Best wishes,

Dear List,
Sandy and others are researching the Pauley family who were on Walker's
Creek before 1807. I am interested in the Lindsey family which was also on
Walker's Creek in the 1780-1800 period and I think migrated to Washington
Co. VA along the South Holston.
Just want to ask knowledgable listers about Walkers Creek. I found one
Walker Creek on USGS maps which flows into Middle fork of Holston R. (See

I want to thank everyone for their help in finding my gr grandmother's parents.
I don't have any information on them or their children, but her parents were
Nicholas (b abt. 1796) and Elizabeth (b abt 1805) Showalter. If you have done
any research on these folks, please contact me. I would love to hear from you
and maybe I can help you with Jenn'y (Jane) family, too!

Jemima,
The land you mentioned that your Archibald Thompson bought from Capt. James
Patton Thompson in 1813, this James is the son of William Thompson and Mary
Patton.
Also this private fort you mentioned was called The Town House.
This James Thompson was a member of Fincastle Co, Va Court.
This James Thompson was born in Augusta Co, Va and later lived in Montgomery
Co, Va with his family and James moved to Washington Co, Va.
And some of his family can be found in Tazewell Co, Va.

Does anyone have any history of the Montgomery co malitia that fought at
the battle of King's Mountain in 1780. I have some of the books about
the battle itself but I am looking for anything that might shed a little
light on some of the relationships of the members of the malitia.
My Samuel Young served as an "indian scout" under Major James Montgomery
and Col Campbell in this battle.
