Thanks for the replies to my query requesting information on the Painter
Collection of Early Shenandoah County Records.
The Painter Collection is deposited at the Shenandoah County Archives,
Woodstock, Va. Among the many documents in the collection is the 1775 Census of
Shenandoah County.
In 1988 the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City, microfilmed the
Painter Collection. A description and contents of the collection can be seen
by going to

Seem that I remember seeing a "Painter Collection" about Shenandoah County
on the LDS site, www.familysearch.org, (library area) and that you could
get it on microfilm. Go to your closest Morman church and they can help you
and have them get the film for you for a small fee. I think you can view it
at thier site for about 2 weeks. Carole

I think you should contact the Shenandoah County Library at Edinburg. Mr
Painter's son worked for the library for several years and I am sure the Library
Director would know about those records. I am sure that they exist.

I am researching the family of Henry HIGGINS who married twice in
Shenandoah County. The first marriage was to Elizabeth Shull in 1817, and
the second was to Elizabeth Balthis in 1822.
Based on 1840 census records, Henry apparently died before 1840 and
Elizabeth Higgins is listed on the census for that year.
In 1850, I find Robert H. Higgins, with wife Rebecca and 3 young children.
I find Dorothy Higgins, age 19, living with a family who lived next door to
Robert H. Higgins.
Finally, I find Henry L

A rare book dealer near my home has copies of "The Alms House of Shenandoah
County" and "Shenandoah County and its courthouse" if anyone is interested.
They are small books of 35 and 160 pages respectfully. They were published
in 1979 and so are still under copyright so I can't make copies unless
someone is willing to track down Mr.. Painter and seek permission. They
were printed at the Stevens City Virginia Commercial Press. I don't know if
that is still in existence.

People may not remember exactly what you did, or what you said, ...but they
will always remember how you made them feel.
My 5 great grandfather was Ulrich (Wolrich) Peters. Can you give me an exact
location of the land he bought from Peter Turney or any additional
information. Ulrich Peters died in 1776 in Shenandoah County. My other
Shenandoah family (Trook/Painter) lived across the river from Palmyra Church
Road. My ancestor Nicholas Druck 1768 - 1829, lived on Stony Creek just west
of Columbia Furnace. He was a bondsman for a marriage of a Beeler girl. I
will have to look for that info. I live in Indiana. Carole Trook-Hack
Tom,
I don't recall anyone researching Arthur but I went to the vashenan archives
and in the year 2000, found msgs containing the word Arthur (nothing for
1998, 1999 and I quit with 2000). However, it could be that someone wrote
about Arthur Smith or whomever. Might want to check those archived msgs,
anyway. Type in vashenan into the search engine at this site:

Hello all,
You are probably wondering why nothing has been updated or added for such a
long time! Actually, it has been, but it has been transparent - all
copyrights and many links have been changed gradually over the past months
and are continuing to be updated until all of the over 2500 pages are up to
date with their proper copyrights and email addresses and links.
However, I have added a couple items and will continue to do so. Tombstone

So far I have not found anyone that can confirm the existence of either the
Painter Collection of Early Shenandoah County Records or the 1775 census. I
will continue with the search. Yes, please check with the Fort Wayne Library.
Also perhaps Daniel Bly might know. The e-mail address I have for him is no
longer correct. I understand he has retired from his teaching position at
Bridgewater College.

ever seeing any other researcher.

Jan,
I have them, they were somewhere else! I am working on the site as I said.
In fact, those pictures are on a CD in my brief case and coming to a web
site near you very soon. Might not be until August, because one week from
tomorrow (next Thursday July 29) our family vacation begins. How long have
we been waiting for that? Too long! Off to the beach - Kitty Hawk, NC.
Hope all is well with you and Sonny - I hope to be in Edinburg for Old Time

You didn't really ask for the ancestors, but it would be my very educated
guess that your Jacks came from the Jack family that was in West Caln (or
East Caln, or Caln) Chester Co. PA in the very early 1700s. The tax lists
are online. One of the Jacks from this family ended up in Jefferson Co. TN,
I think via the Sheandoah Valley.

Linda,
Stoney Creek is located between a place near Edinburg and just south of
Orkney Springs. There is a Hotteltown Lane part way between Columbia
Furnace and Liberty Furnace. It is located along Stoney Creek off of
Dellinger Acres Rd. The only Elk Run that I know of is in Faquier County,
VA and no where near Stoney Creek.
Several of my cross families were in this area.

Looking for marriage information for:
Pearl Jack b. 1881
Katie Jack b. 1883
Austin Jack b. 1893
Mary Jack b. 1894
They are the children of Marcus P. Jack and Jennie R. Clem.

I forgot to mention your Painter (Bender) family - I suppose you know all
about them....they also seem to be in Shenandoah Co in 1740s. Painter Creek
runs into Stoney Creek I think. I have looked at the Indian Attack on
Painter family sometime around 1758 because....they were not that far from
my Turneys at that time, and there is a reference I have never been able to
prove that my Henry Turney as a child was taken as a captive and released
with Josiah Ramsey on Scioto River to Col.
