Bryan,
I too have connections to Rich Neck and the CARY family. The "Calendar of
State Papers" gives the following item for the year 1808:
By the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
A Proclamation- February 25th.
Authorizing the acceptance of the tender made by Wade MOUNTFORT of his
house at Rich-Neck in the county of Warwick, for the purpose of holding the
Courts and transacting the business of the said County, during the times
required for the enlargement and repair of the Cou
When is the November meeting scheduled?
I have repeatedly offered to help with the Library, but never received a
follow-up call. If help is still needed there, the offer still stands.

I've been collecting some information about Bolthrope (Boltrup, Bolthrop) and Rich Neck (Old Forest). Two Patents/Plantations in early Warwick County, VA. Can anyone direct me to a deeper history of these places, including families who lived and died there? My lineage is heavily connected to the CURTIS, CARY and HARWOOD families.
Thanks!

The Tidewater Genealogical Society is scheduled to hold it's annul election
of officers in November at the annul meeting. At present, we do not yet have
a slate of officers and all offices are open expect Treasurer. If anyone is
interested in becoming an officer of the society, or if you know of someone
that might be interested, please let me know. If you suggest someone else,
please ensure that they are willing to serve.

Rod,
Thank your for your complete message. You are right, it just never crossed
our minds or came up in discussion. If I may, I would suggest that we hold
off until the attorney's are done. No reason to reinvent the wheel and do
twice when you know changes are immanent. I know you are up to your ears
traveling for work and other responsibilities. A few more weeks shouldn't
matter. Good to hear from you. Karen

I would love to live closer and help! I realize how important it is for
those members (local members of course!) to get involved and rotate and take
turns serving. We do this in the OGS that I belong too.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~vamip/vamip/cemetery_controvery.htm I have most of
the cemetery info that I have no up. I have not yet address the controversy
which is interesting. In 1932 Miss A.E. Shaw from California wrote a letter
asking about the cemeteries and what happened to them. An investigation
ensued, with cover-ups, lies and letters from Washington, Ft. Monroe, Corps
of Army Engineers. I do have the government correspondence here and will
attack it this afternoon. K

Rod,
Thank you so much for this thorough explanation of the status of the TGS
Library. I'll look forward to serving in any way that I can.
Your message gives a number of ways in which others might be of help, I
notice, so perhaps you will have a few volunteers come forth as a result.
Sure hope so. 'Tis true - many hands make light work.

Thanks for your help. I'll see what I can do with the info.

Jim,
Perhaps it would be helpful to give a brief summary of each job description.
There may be some folks who would see themselves doing a particular job, but
might be intimidated by the job title.
Worth a try.

To all members:
It is my understanding that according to the bylaws, Rod cannot serve again
even though he may wish to. Since I have been associated with the society,
it seems that Rod and Emily have pulled 10x their weight. It is now time
for others to step forward and bear some of the load. Rod addressed this
in the last quarterly.
I have volunteered my services for 2 years to develop and maintain the
website. Rod works out of town, yet finds the time and energy to hold the

we didn't think to upload them when we built the website a few years ago, it

were/are published in the 20 year History of the TGS. If so that publication
doesn't reflect changes made since it was published in 1989 or 1990. (I think
the "By-laws" have been amended twice since then)

What is the place called "Pressey's" in York or old Warwick County? Is there any information or documentation about it?
It was formerly the home of Rev. Thomas CURTIS (1774-1840) and his first wife, Ann (?) (early 1800's). It was then passed to his three oldest children, and in the mid-1930's it was the home of a Woodfin (?) CURTIS.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Karen for the Mulberry messages. I have a great deal on Curtis

In the 1920's-30's there were Bibles and other family records about the HARWOOD and CURTIS families held by Edmund Williams HARWOOD, Mrs. B.L. POINDEXTER and Mr. James Madison CURTIS of the former Warwick County (now Newport News, of course).
(J.M. Curtis and wife, Mollie H. McKenney, had a daughter, Roberta P. Curtis, born March 14, 1873.)
Does anyone know who these people were, and/or who their descendents are? Does anyone know where the originals of these records are today?
Thanks in advance for any
Hi Bryan,
Good query. I will be waiting with bated breath to see if you get any
nibbles. If you do, it would make a good story for the Wynne Newsletter.

Hi Bryan,
A Col & Mrs. Vollertson published a compilation of transcriptions of all
the Warwick Co. censuses -- Who Was Who, Warwick Co. Va., 1782-1880. I
think it has been reprinted. I will send you the pp. for 1784; it is the
Tithes & Taxables for that year, almost better than a census.

Karen,
I just spoke with Mr. Bill O'Neill, the Registrar for the Virginia War Museum
here in Newport News. He immediately knew what I was asking about, and
suggested that anyone interested in an answer to this question, go to the
Virginia War Museum website:
www.warmuseum.org
and send a message to the attention of Bill O'Neill, Registrar
He says he'll be happy to respond to your specific questions.
Hope this helps.

I do not believe I have read them but was informed. They really should be
up on the website, now that you bring it to my attention. I will mention it
to Rod next time I see him. Thanks for making me aware of this oversight.

Middlesex County VA has excellent records and is not a burned county like
those adjacent. Look up The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
in the phone book. Find the Family History Center and see the catalog for
microfilms you can order from Middlesex and read right there in the
Center. Also, the Surname File
has many Garrett in it; check all the cards for your names. . Also see
the films of records of Genealogical Department of Rare Books and
Manuscripts of College of William and Mary. Go to Loca
Does anyone have the complete list of the listing of HEADS OF FAMILIES completed in 1784 WARWICK COUNTY, Stanley Precinct (Mulberry Island, etc.)? I understand that Edmund CURTIS (6/5/1754-ca. 1820), husband of Ann CARY (ca. 1769-ca. 1814) is listed with 4 persons, one house, and five other holdings, but I wonder who else might be living there at that time. Is this census published anywhere on the internet? What about other Warwick County censuses. (I have the 1850 census for Warwick County).

Does anyone have a catalog of the burials on Mulberry Island (Ft. Eustis)? Is (was) there more than one burial ground there?

We are in dire need of people to fill the officers' slots. As Karen said,
Rod has served his term. Jim Sample and I have both served longer than we
were supposed to according to the bylaws. The board passed a special
resolution for this in our cases. Someone has shown interest in the
Treasurer's position, but I don't know of anyone so far willing to replace
Rod as President, or to be one of our Vice-Presidents or to replace me as
Recording Secretary. In addition there are several ot
