Hello Lois , and welcome to the list, from looking at Google and other search engines it seems that The Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital was in peacetime the Cardiff City Asylum. see http://www.1914-1918.net/hospitals_uk.htm I cannot find any information about it on the web but you may be more sucesssful. There is a website called the Rossbret Asylums Website at http://www.institutions.org.uk/asylums/ but it does not appear to cover Cardiff at the moment but it might be worth checking in the future as

Jean: Assuming that you determine that the listing in the 1881 census is your family, do a check on the FreeBMD site for marriages of Thomas Watkins a few years prior to the birth of John in 1871. I did a quick search starting with 1869, and there were several Thomas Watkins marrying a Mary, i.e., Mary Morgan, March qtr. in Pontypridd.
