I have just joined the list and am researching 'my' branch of the Seward
family in the Chard district of Somerset. My 2x great grandfather was
FRANCIS SEWARD born abt. 1814 in Chard according to censuses.
So far I have been unable to find the names of his parents. I can find no
birth or baptism for him and his marriage certificate to JANE BROWN in
ILMINSTER is in pre 1837 format so father's name is not given,
If any of these names appear in anyone's research I would love to hear from
them please.

I have been reading a book about the Bourne Valley and the Chutes in N.W.Hants and East Wilts a game is mentioned called SINGLE STICK.
Would anybody have any idea what single stick was/is?
The passage referring to UPTON, is as follows;
Up to 1830 the villages in the Valley, says the record. sat spiritually in darkness, in the cruel shadow of death. The annual feast and revels with their cruel sports, including SINGLE STICK, wrestling, etc.,were scenes of blood, drunkenness, sensuality and sin.

Hi listers
There's good news and bad news for Oxfordshire FHS customers on the
microfiche and CD front.
The good news : two new parish register transcript CDs have now been
released, these being Chipping Norton volume 2 and Abingdon volume 1. For
details of the parishes included, prices and how to order, please see :-

The bad news : as the turnover of the society has now reached the legal
limit, we have had to register with HM Customs and Excise for Value Added

Hello all
just to let you know that we now have installed a full search engine on our
site.
Go to www.knightsure.co.uk/knightroots/genealogy to search for an
ancestor, parish or place.
We are sure that will prove useful in view of the many thousands of
transcriptions already on the site.
Take care,Linda & Tony
Thanks to Ian and Elizabeth for the info they have
provided about the census 1851.
These are the same as the entries given by
Elizabeth recorded as STERRING or SHORNEY on
Gordon Beavington's version.
May I ask if the spelling was the same as on your
version Ian, if it was a different version of the
1851?
A very grateful Richard Parsons
Hi Richard,
You've probably been sent this info already but
here goes.
There are no Sturmeys in 1851 Wiltshire but there
are Sturmey and Stermy.

For a good description of the type of fighting known as "Single Stick", go
to the Wedmore, Somerset website at: http://www.tutton.org/wedchr16.html
Wedmore seems to have been famous for its Single Stick players. Many of my
ancestors came from Wedmore, which probably explains why I'm absolutely
lethal with a rolled up newspaper! (Ask any fly!).
Best wishes,

Hi All,
Could sks check the 1891 Census, Reading, Berks for my GG Uncle George A
HILLIER b 1890, Reading, Berks. His father may have been William
HILLIER. The only info I have is from George A HILLIER's 'Attestation
Papers' for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in 1914. I can't
find any details for his birth 23 Apr 1890, nor his marriage to Violet
GODDARD b 21 Mar 1894, Cricklade, Wilts.
I presume George A went to Canada (don't know if he immigrated with his
parents or alone), then joined the C
Would anybody have any information Spye Park House which stood in
Spye Park near Bowden Hill in Wiltshire and was owned by the Spicer
family until destroyed by fire sometime around 1974.
I believe there was feature at the time in one of the newspapers of
the house and it's history and reports on the fire which completely
gutted the building and it had to be eventually demolished.
The house was built c1650 and was changed many times and I believe
was also burned to the ground in the mid 1800's before
