Hi Roy
Its quite sad to hear of all these places missing or disused.
And looking at the map of Langholm, I suppose "Staplegortown" is Staple
Gordon, marked as "Church - remains of" near Langholm.
To change the subject a bit, I was researching a relative, William Irving of
Longtown, who was a portrait painter. He exhibited four paintings in the
Carlisle Exhibition of 1824:
30. Portrait of W Brown Esq. Hawick
56. Portrait of Alexander Brown, Esq. Orchard, Roxburghshire
101. Portrait of Mrs
not sure still working on it. Late 1800's I believe were there certain ports
they came into then? If so is there port records I could check?
Thanks

Posting my interest. I am studying the history and migration of
the PORTEOUS and PORTEUS families (as well as other variant
spellings, such as PORTAS, PORTESS, PORTIS, PORTICE, PORTUS -
amongst many others).
I'm researching the history and spread of the above names -
especially the migration of members of any branches of this
formerly small Borders family from southern Scotland - initially
to northern England and Ireland, then to the US and Canada - and
later to the former British colonies of New Ze
This query which I just posted had a major error--
Elizabeth Gill married Daniel Skelton 5 April 1827, Kirkbride, not 1877 as
in the previous post. If I get my facts straight, I might get some good
replies.

I don't know if this is of any help, but "Quelle" is the modern German word
for spring, and also means source.

I thought that perhaps this piece from SCT-ROX list might be of interest?
For example the Rev James Snadden
writes in his 'History of Liddesdale':
"The usual explanation of the name 'Wheelrig' is that it was so called
because it was traversed by the old Roman road, the only road, they say for
wheeled traffic. This is rather crude and unscientific. The Anglo-Saxon word

Hi Roy
I've never heard of either Wheel or Bells churches, can you give us any more
information about them?
I did find a reference to another stray church register, in the Carlisle

We have lately seen an interesting church register in the possession of
Thomas Allan, one of the workmen at Messrs Dalton and Bell9s foundry in
Carlisle.
We understand he is the lineal descendant of the Rev Robert Allan, who

Hi All,
I am still trying to pin down my Elizabeth Gill and her mother, probably
Jemima Gill. Here is what I have.
Jemima Gill gave birth in the St. Mary's Workhouse, Carlisle, on 28 Mar
1806, to Elizabeth Gill, illegitimate, no father given.
The only other thing I can find that might possibly fit Jemima is a
questionable birth in Whitehaven abt. 1795, That would make her about 11
years old when Elizabeth was born. Possible.
Elizabeth Gill m. Daniel Skelton 5 April 1877 in Kirkbride. They had four

Hi Bridget,
Bell's Kirk or Bell's Chapel stood at NY 653 951 and was evidently at one
time part of a 'village' it is recorded in various documents including the
grant to William the Lion. Warburton notes it in the late eighteenth century
and a number of papers record the existence of graves as recently as the
nineteenth century, however nothing now remains.
Wheel Kirk or Wheel Chapel is recorded as having given hospitality to
Edward I of England. A small fragment of carved stone is preserved in Wilton

Hi List,
I had lost my Internet connection for a couple of weeks and finally got
back on . By an error that I did, I deleted all my folders and address
book. Now that I have the connection again I still have no address book.
Would any one out there have the address of "Waugh" I think that is how
he spelled his name. Sorry I don't remember what his first name is.
I am researching the "BURNIE'S". He had sent to me information that I had
placed in a folder and you know the rest of the story so......i
