1. [WRY] THOMAS SMITH lookup [1]
Would SKS with access to the Yorkshire 1841 or 1851censuses please look up the THOMAS SMITH family living, I believe, in Leeds or the immediate environs? Unfortunately I know nothing about the family (my great-great grandparents) other than that they had a son named Thomas. In 1841 he would have been approx. 3, and therefore approx. 13 in 1851. If more than one Thomas Smith family meets these criteria I would appreciate learning of them all (e.g. name/trade/age of parents, their address and name/ages of
2. [WRY] Almondbury Baptisms 1819 [1]
Another page of baptisms I copied and thought I'd share them. A good copy, but some of the names are hard to read. Best guess. Parish of Almondbury 1819 May 30 - No. 1273 Elizabeth, daughter of John and Nancy STRINGER of Castelhill. Occupation: Clothier May 31 - No. 1274 names too faded, could be James, son of George FEARNALLY? No. 1275 Abraham (born 16 Nov 1818), son of James and Mary KAYE of Town. Occ. Clothier No. 1276 Mary, daughter of John and Susannah HIRST of Taylorhill. Occ. Clothier
3. [WRY] HOWELLs of Sharlston [1]
Hello List, I am new to this list but am hoping for great things. I was born in Manchester but have lived in Cheshire for most of my life. I have found a great many of my husband's ancestors but mine are proving elusive. I have been looking for the birth of my great-grandfather James HOWELL, Stoke-on-Trent, c 1858. His father, also James was a cabinetmaker. In 1901 James' nephew Thomas HOWELL was living with them in Manchester, so I am hoping to get further back via Thomas' family. Thomas was born in Sh

I next visit the LDS FHC next week to look at my film. Personally I'm on the 2nd register from 1878 onwards, have already gone through the 1st register 1855-1878. If I've time to spare, I'll goes back through the first register. We only get 2 hours a day on the film readers. George Regards George Toth of Stockport, UK Some names being researched:
10. RE: [WRY] Knowledge and Experience ( was Re: Look ups.) [1]
How I agree with Nancy! I have just done a cut and Paste from a reply I sent in January, check the archives if you like, as follows :- "I totally agree with what you are saying, when I was first introduced to my wife's Yorkshire (and other Northcountry) relatives I was told in no uncertain terms that "up here a spade is a bloomin spade not a shovel" (but the word was not bloomin) I have always found this to be and certainly feel that it is better to be direct than go round the houses. Guy says > Certainly the Yorkshire Archaeological Society (YAS), Leeds hold them [the > Wakefield Manorial Rolls] and have been making transcriptions of them for a > number of years. > http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/yas.htm Yes, and the transcriptions are excellent: but there are only about a dozen years transcribed so far, spread fairly evenly across six or seven centuries, and appearing at about one per year. So don't bank on finding the one you want just yet! chris@xacbradley.co.uk
14. Re: [WRY] (Forest of) Knaresborough Wills [1]
Thanks for the good laugh, Roy. For those of you who may not be aware Webtv is a little unit that sits atop and is connected through the TV. For a fee of $24.95 US dollars per month, one is able to access the internet. The little "box" which has a cost of about $200.00 has no "guts" so to speak, and one cannot "download" and store "files", cannot use CD's and we are even limited as to the type of attachments that Webtv can use. If one has a printer, which I do, you may print information and save e-mail
15. [WRY] Worsbrough [1]
I tried looking at the 1851 census for Worsbrough, (HO107 2332) and it was totally illegible. Can anyone tell me if this is common to all copies, or if I should try searching an alternative? I was looking for the Button family, brickmakers, of Brickhouse Yard, Blacker Lane in Worsbrough Regards Margaret

18. [WRY] BARKER [1]
Hello, My earliest BARKER family are from Lund near Beverley. I know this isn't West Yorkshire, but their descendents moved into other parts of Yorkshire. My line moved to the Bubwith area, and then spread out throughout the county. I'm not sure where they all went, although my mother has cousins in Leeds, Pudsey, Wakefield etc In case anyone else is tracing this family, here are the details William BARKER married Frances SEAMOR in Lund, Beverley 1816 Philip BARKER married Jane GLEDSTONE (marriage not
19. [WRY] COX/SCHOLEY [1]
Hello Listers, I have a Miles COX marrying Hannah SCHOLEY, Headingley 4 March 1738. I have a possible baptism for Miles, son of Jonas COX in Leeds, 24 Dec 1707 - making him 31 when he married - which is why he's a possible. There were Jonas Coxes in later generations. But there were also a lot of Coxes with similar family names too. Hannah SCHOLEY is more of a brick wall. Can anyone help to chip away at the mortar on this brick wall? Many thanks, Maggie

21. [WRY] DIXON - YKS stray in New Zealand [1]
Greetings all, There's been a few DIXON postings on Yks lists recently that don't connect to my research yet. I've just stumbled across an event in an old New Zealand paper which may mean something to someone. William DIXON, draper of Newton Rd died 1886, age 56, son of John and Elizabeth Dixon. Married c.1856 to Elizabeth Ellen BAILEY at Yorkshire. Arrived N.Z. c. 1868. These people are unknown to me but it would be great if they turned out to be a nephew or similar of my pioneer ancestor who was from a
22. [WRY] How to get a whole register on the IGI in FamilySearch [1]
FOLLOWING my posting on how to call up the complete standardised and unique surnames table from the 1881 census discs, here's another little tip that some of you newer listers may not be familiar with. Did you know that you can call up an entire parish register (or the equivalent from the bishop's transcripts, if that is what the LDS film relates to) on the FamilySearch website (www.familysearch.org)? Here is what you do..... When the opening screen comes up, click on SEARCH and then on Internationa
23. [WRY] Ryhill burials [1]
Is there anyone who would either have burials for Ryhill Wragby or is going to the Archives who could possible do a look up for me, I am searching a death of a David Paley and there is one listed on Rootsweb BMD for the June Qut of 1843, he definitely would have been Ryhill as this is where all his children were born and his wife is still there in 1851 on the census. Much appreciation in advance Lynn Keane
24. [WRY] RE: 1881 Census [1]
This is an excellent tip. As a refinement, although I'm sure everyone has thought of this .. when you get the Access table up, there should be 2 columns, SURNAME and STANDARDSURNAME. If you highlight the STANDARDSURNAME column and sort ascending alphabetical, you can then look at the common varient of the surname you're looking for, and the other column will show the 'odd' ones. Of course, going through the file name by name is the surest way, but this 'quick-fix' may bring up a few leads too. Hope that
