1. [WRY] Re: Beal [1]
Just to thank everyone who replied privately to my request for information on the village of Beal. It was very useful, including the map information - thank you! I am still stuck as to how I get the birth entry around 1810 of Richard Thompson of Beal, Kellington. I have been to the Borthwick Institute in York and looked at the Bishops Transcripts but some of them around that time are so illegible, it could have been there, just not plain enough to read. Will there be other information at Wakefield
2. [WRY] Leeds St.Peter -Help req'd [1]
Hi everyone, I'm very confused and hoping that SKS can help me out. Is anybody going to a Record Office that has Parish Registers for Leeds St.Peter? Would you be willing to do a look-up for me? I can reciprocate for anyone with interests in the counties of North Yorks / Cleveland or Durham. I have the Birth Certificate for my Great grandfather George HAMPSHIRE. He was born 31 August 1845 at 7, Harewood St. Leeds., the son of Joseph HAMPSHIRE [fruiterer] and his wife Elizabeth (formerly H
3. [WRY] GREEN and BINNS [1]
For Kathleen: My mother`s sister Mary STEAD (nee MARCHAM) and her husband Frank STEAD lived at White Abbey Farm in Green Lane, Glusburn. Running off Green Lane was Binns Lane where Frank Stead`s brother Herbert also had a farm. It seems likely the names of these roads may well have originated with your ancestors. Do you have any STEADs in your more recent family tree? Herbert STEAD`s son David, who farmed there after his father died eventually went to Canada to farm there and Binns Lane Farm was sold. If
4. [WRY] New Lister [1]
Hello Everyone, My name is Brian Isaac and live in Briton Ferry, Neath West Glamorgan. I am married to Melva (nee Butler), We have been tracing our roots for about three years, and have, unfortunately made very little progress with Melva's BUTLER line. Her grandfather was Frederick (Fred) Butler son of John and Emma (nee Smith). Frederick was born on the 26th February 1871 at Cardigan Place, Burley (sub-district of Kirkstall). We believe that he also had a sister Blanche who was born in 1870. By the t
5. [WRY] Researching HALLAM [1]
Hi All, I have a brick wall in my HALLAM research. My Thomas HALLAM was born in the Sheffield area abt. 1675 and died in Maryland, after 1702. He was the son of Thomas HALLAM, who was born abt. 1650 in the Sheffield area. I do not have spouses or occupations for either man, and I don't know when the younger Thomas sailed to the USA. Does any kind soul in the WRY family know anything about this branch of the HALLAMS? And did they come from Upper or Nether Hallam? Would be thrilled to hear any s
6. [WRY] SPURRELL GLEDHILL HUNTER [1]
My quest to to find descendants of SPURRELL, GLEDHILL and HUNTER familes who may still be living. Ann DORSEY married Benjamin SPURRELL in 1866 in Warter ERY. They moved to the WRY. Of six children born to them only two survived long enough to be married Frances Ann SPURRELL born 1870 in Methley married William HUNTER in Pontefract in 1893. Did they ever have any children? If so where. I have attempted to try and locate HUNTER children born in the area of Pontefract by using the GRO indexes, but the surname
7. [WRY] Re: BIG THANKS BASE? [1]
I would like to thank all who gave me advice on the meaning of "base" on a baptism record, in paricular many thanks to Family Lindley, Paul Kirby, Brenda Townsend (seems hanky panky is not a modern revelation), Chris Bradley and Andy Kerridge. It looks as if the Father concerned was playing away from his own doorstep:-). I am still stuck on the Akid mentioned on a burial record, if anyone comes across it please enlighten me. Thanks once again for all your efforts, they have been greatly appreciated. Enid

9. [WRY] Re: Skewers [1]
Hi The description of manufacture of skewers seems about right except for the finish, which would be galvanized, anodising is only applicable to aluminium or aluminum for our US listers. Regards Tom Iddon interested in IDDON's anywhere, FAIRBANKS Yorks and USA
10. Re: [WRY] Location in Calder Vally [1]
Hi Philip The following may be of help. On the current 1:25000 map, Steep Lane (hamlet ?) is shown about half mile WNW of Sowerby, grid ref SE 030237. There is a "+" shown which may be your Church. There is also a hamlet of Long Royd about half a mile SW of Sowerby at grid ref SE 036223. I hope this is useful to you. -- Roger D Gill Researching: GILL, BERRY, CHARLESWORTH and ROBINSON around Huddersfield [WRY] -- ----- Original Message ----- From: Philip Greenwood To: <
11. RE: [WRY] Elliott & Muff of Bowling [1]
Could I offer a word of advice on the Blackburn Registers. As a resource they are fantastic, since they are indexed by name, allowing you to find relatives throughout the cemeteries around Bradford. A couple of words of caution, however : Firstly, the name index is in two parts -- those named in the grave, then other relatives named on the headstone. However, our experience has been that the actual inscriptions often carry many more names than those in the indices. Solution -- look at all the entries for
12. [WRY] New to List [1]
Hi: I am new to the list & very new to genealogical research in the UK. I have recently discovered that my RAYNARD roots extend back as far as the late 1600's to a small village named Laverton in the Parish of Kirkby-Malzeard. I have been told that RAYNARD ancestors lived in a house, which may have been named "Holme house" or a spelling close to that. Would anyone be able to tell me if this house is in the Laverton vicinity and if it still stands? Are there any RAYNARD, REYNARD, or RENARD researchers on

16. [WRY] WHITAKER/ELLIS marriage [1]
There seem to be a few people researching ELLIS, so I wonder if anyone has come across a marriage of a male WHITAKER to a female ELLIS ? It is likely to have been between about 1810-1825, possible location Sheffield, but Leeds, Wakefield areas also a possibility. Here's hoping Many thanks Eileen
17. [WRY] Raventofts- thanks again! [1]
Thankyou on the list. I now have a much clearer idea of what Raventofts (all three of them) is all about. The map printed perfectly. I'm having it framed! I'm especially happy to have the information about the Jackson family that has lived in the area in the past. I believe that this must certainly be my Grandfather's family. I will look for a more direct connection, such as his birth record, but to know this much is wonderful. Any easy way to search for a birth record when you don't kno
18. Re: [WRY] BIRTH RECORD - YORK [1]
Hi, Marjorie. Births for England and Wales from July, 1837, are on a national index. These are available at various places throughout the world--some LDS Family History Centers, the Family Records Centre in Islington, some libraries in England, etc. It was not compulsory to register until 1874, so not every person is registered. Local Register's Offices only have the records for their Registration District. Apparently, York did not not start keeping them until 1852, or perhaps they had a fire or some s
19. [WRY] Knaresborough Wills [1]
The mention of "huge collection of Knaresborough Wills that I have extracted and indexed" in a previous mailing of mine has evoked a flurry of excitement and much tapping of keys....!!!! In response to the enquiries along the line of "What are the Knaresborough Wills?", "How do I access them?", etc., I append the WYAS info sheet on the subject of Wills. I trust that the individual enquirers will accept this as a response. So far I have indexed (and generated 6x4 Will cards with a precis of the Will)
20. [WRY] Re: BIRSTALL 1891 census [1]
Can some wise soul please inform me in which district the 1891 census for Birstall could be found? I have looked at the LDS site, and come away more confused than when I started. There are some 20 fiches for Batley and I don't know if this is even where Birstall would be included. Thanks Deborah
