Anyone researching the WILKINSON Family in Brayton

It's Yorkshire Day,sithee !
The warmest of good wishes to all those
fortunate enough to be born in God's Own
County--from Middlesbrough to Sheffield,
from Bridlington to Bowland, and all points
in between.
And the same good wishes to all those who,
through no fault of their own, were born
elsewhere, but have Yorkshire blood in their
veins.

I there is SKS who could do a lookup for me in the 1891 Census?
I am trying to find my g.grandmother Hannah SPURR aged 65 born Thorpe Yorks, she should be living in Batley. In the 1881 census she was living at 1 New Street, Batley, aged 55, in 1884 when my g.grandfather died they lived at 2 Union Street. I have also been unable to find her anywhere in the 1901 census, and I know she didn't die until 1910.
Thanks
Betty

Rather sweeping statements and not entirely accurate.

Although about 25% of births failed to get registered in the early years of the civil registration system, marriages did not have the same problem because they were registered as a result of having the wedding ceremony; the couple did not have to go and register it separately.

I had a look through the Meltham census but very little is legible. I found
a John 55 with George 45 both clothiers but there appears to be lots of
Taylors in the area.
The Huddersfield FHS at www.hdfhs.org.uk have transcribed the '41 census
and show 2574 Taylors & 231 Pickles. It could be worth asking them for
details.

John Gurney (john.gurney2@virgin.net) asked about Elizabeth Ellen
Denham, possibly born at Baildon in the mid-1850s.
Her birth is recorded on the http://www.YorkshireBMD.org.uk site.

So a birth certificate will be available from Leeds R. O.;
probably from GRO also but I didn't check for a reference.

Soothill does come under Dewsbury (My Gt. Grandfather died there) but I think you have to send to Wakefield Register Office for copy certificates.

Dear all,
I have been struggling for months to find my GGma's family and think that I
have finally made a breakthrough, but need confirmation from the 1871
census.
This large BUXTON family were still Hawkers living in Selby in 1891, so
could have been there in 1871, just need to tie Annie to them before sending
for birth certificate. From birth places of children could also be living
Ferrybridge.

Hello John,
Thanks for that.
I have the marriage certificate, but the details don't give me any clues as
to her family, except her age (not always reliable), and her fathers name
Joseph SIMPSON, stone mason.
In the 1891 census she gives her birth place as Barkisland, but that could
be her mothers family home, although she was living in Halifax, Orange
Court, at the time of her marriage.
There is no sign of her on the IGI, and unfortunately I'm tied to the house
as a full time carer, so am not able to get an

My 3G Grandfather, William Thomas BROWN (b. abt 1861 in Leeds) has his occupation listed on the 1881 Census for Hunslet as "Mechanic Fitter (S/M)". The "Mechanic Fitter" part makes sense in the context that his father is listed as a "Boiler Maker", but can someone tell me what the "(S/M)" stands for?

Hi Ian
I don't know what the answer is but you've certainly stumbled on a very interesting discrepancy there. I have family around there as well, so if you get any replies which are not posted to the list I'd be grateful if you could forward them on to me.
If nobody has any better ideas, the way I would approach it is to look at a street map of the area (either a real one or www.streetmap.co.uk or similar) and compare it with the description of the enumeration districts in the two censuses so you can v
Many thanks to all you helped me. You folks are wonderful.

Subject: 1891 Lookup Request
Looking for the family of John BARRASS (b. 1846 in Holbeck) ans Sarah HOWDEN (b. 1853 in Chapel Allerton) on the 1891 Census
On his WWI enlistment papers here in Canada, my GG grandfather (William Edward BARRASS, b 24 Dec 1880 in Hunslet) listed 3 years previous enlistement with the "2nd West Yorkshire Regiment". Family members say he fought in South Africa. Can someone tell me where to go to find records of this?
Thanks in advance,

Hi.....if there is anyone with access to the 1851 census of Ecclesall
Bierlow I would hugely appreciate a lookup for ANN COATES....most likely in her
50's. She died there in June of 1856 and I would love to see the makeup of her
family in 1851 to see if she is my elusive 3xgrandmother that I've been
searching for forever!

I'm just wondering if anyone would have convenient access to the Newton Kyme/Toulston parish registers for around 1823.
I'm looking for my 3rd Great grandmother, Jane WARD's birth. In 1844 on her marriage certificate, she gives her address as Holbeck. They were married in Leeds parish church. Her age was "minor", and her father's name was Thomas WARD, occupation "Farmer".
By 1851 she was living in Tadcaster. She gives her age as 27 and her place of birth as Toulston. On the 1861 census she gives her
Hi All,
I am doing a bit of searching on behalf of someone else and wondered if there is anyone out there with connections to a family named SMIRTHWAIT(E) / SMURTHWAIT(E) or SMURFIT
Mainly from the Outwood/Stanley area of Wakefield and moving into Rothwell & Methley.
Any information gratefully received.

There have been some interesting ideas coming forth about errant husbands, or at least missing husbands on a census, etc. It has given me all kinds of help actually. I have a great grandmother who was a widow with 3 children in 1866, had a 4th child, fatherless; 1871 census was married to Henry, and a new child with a father of Henry, 1873 another child with a father of Henry; 1881 census is widowed again; 1891 census married to Henry again, and 1901 a widow again. It has become bizarre!

Has SKS got an index for the earlier census's
I am looking the family of John OLDFIELD and his wife Annice. By the time
the 1881 census came around the older children had left home. In 1881 they
were living in Soothill but the children I have found were born Flanshaw
Lane/ Wrenthorpe and Potovens.
I do have the CD's for the above census's but without the index and
knowing where they would be is a bit difficult.
I am very happy to do look ups for anyone.
Many thanks

Hi
In the 1851 census my ancester is described as a commercial traveller, then in brackets appears what looks like Alex Porter Trade. Is there someone with any knowledge of what this is/was who can point me in the right direction. Any help or ideas very welcome.
