Dear WRG Colleagues,
At the suggestion of Jeanne Muse, I have created a new web page. On it are
four corrections to erroneous published sources concerning the WHITNEY family.
They are:
Benjamin WHITNEY, Jr., d. 1713, Watertown
Samuel WHITNEY, m. 1722, Stratford, Ann LABOREE
Benjamin WHITNEY, d. 1736, Watertown
Henry WHITNEY, m. 1769, Watertown, Hannah TOMBS
See the following URL:
Hopefully these errors will not be propagated any further.
Dear WRG,
I have just posted to my website a bibliography of about 300 sources
which contain genealogical information about the Whitney family.
Almost all pertain to New England, and the majority to the family of
John and Elinor (-----) WHITNEY of Watertown, MA. See the URL
for details.
Anyone who knows of a source not included which contains such data,
Please send a bibliographical citation to it, and I will add it to
the page. Anyone who can amplify any
Friends,
I have not been able to answer e-mail messages for about 2 weeks, and
I'm not sure when I will be able to resume. My mother passed away on
the 30th of July, so I had to travel to Florida, and now I am very
busy dealing with her effects and the arrangements surrounding that
event. In addition, we are remodeling. In addition, we are about to
have several out-of-town guests. This is on top of all the usual
tasks that fall to someone with a family, a house, and a full-time job.

Peg Sanborn and a cast of thousands (:-]) have put in yeoman service

with occasional towns in Maine.
There are several published vital record books for Massachusetts from which we
have not abstracted the Whitney entries yet. Anyone with access to any of the

Dear WRG: Here is the descent from Benjamin Whitney and his first wife.
Previously we had only the line from his third child, David Whitney. I have
deleted that line from this descendancy chart, as well as all of the descent
from the second wife, Abigail Bridge, because they both have previously been
a part of Witney11 and Witney12. As much of this material as possible I have
confirmed from the VR sources we all have. The remainder comes from a
typescript "book" that I found in the Sutro Library in San

Wood(s) families where she would fit in.

Dear Larry:
Oh, no - you don't get me in the middle on that one!!! I only said that one
person on the list, using a Mac, was having problems with staying connected
to Robert Ward's Web Site, and was told by another Mac-user on the Whitney
list that her problem was caused by a flaw in the operating system that was
being fixed with the advent of System 8. I know not of MacIntosh except that
they make great pies - very tasty with a nice slab of sharp cheddar!
I also remember one person complaining mildly t
Today, in my local library, (Stamford, CT) I found "The History and Genealogy
of the Families of Old Fairfield". P. 1040 starts a line of Whitneys with :

Dear WRG:
Some time ago I was sent some printouts of the Vermont Census index data on
the Whitney's. I've come upon it again recently, and thought I would take
the time to put it in electronic form so that everyone in the WRG could have
it. I'll be sharing it with you over the next few days.

The Fairfield History also mentions Richard, (b. Norwalk 1687, N.VR) m.
Hannah Darling (ibid) daughter of John Darling, b. abt. 1689, d. at
Greenfield, 20 October, 1774, ae. 85.
"He built a mill at Sasco River, but by 1714 had settled in Stratford" Then
gives his children, two at Norwalk, one Stratford, one Stratfield.
My point is this: He was the brother of the alleged Samuel (John, Henry), he
was a miller, as was his father, AND, his wife, from Norwalk, died at
Greenfield, which is where his son (anot
Dear WRG's,
I have the Maine Census Indexes of Whitneys, for the years 1830,
1840,and 1850. I also have New Hampshire's for 1830 as the two states are
mixed together. Because of the very small print, I find the task of typing
them daunting. Is there anyone of you who would scan them for the group,
if I snail mailed them to you? I may have to preface them with a county
guide, especially for the 1830's.
Next, I have a list of Whitney Marriages printed in the "Maine Farmer"
in the mid 1800's. T
Hello All;
Allan wrote about the line of Benjamin Whitney, I looked him up in Pierce and
found the following:
Thomas Whitney (Thomas, John), b. Watertown, Aug. 24, 1656; m. Jan. 29, 1679
Elizabeth Lawrence, b. Feb. 30, 1659; d. in Bolton Feb. 8, 1741.
He resided in Watertown, Stow and Lancaster, in that part incorporated
later as Bolton. He bought 11 1/2 acres in Cambridge of A. Rowse, Mar. 10,
1679. Witness Geo. Laurence, his father-in-law. In Feb. 1681, Geo. and
Elizabeth Laurence gave to son and dau.

This Samuel Whitney & Anne Laboree debate is what it's all about! I love
seeing everyone get involved in a discussion & providing proof to resolve a
question. It can get really exciting ... this "genealogy stuff"!
My notes section under John Whitney and Elizabeth Smith will reflect our
findings so that future researchers will not "copy mistakes" made by others
in the past.
Thanks to everyone for resolving this issue!

Aaron and Abigail Parker listed in Chelmsford:

Dear WRG:
I passed along a question about a problem one of our new members was having
with using her Mac to access Robert Ward's website. Since that time a number
of people have sent me messages with suggestions of how to use Macs for
various genealogical purposes and correct problems with using the WWW and
other "connectability" concerns.
I don't use a Mac. In all of these cases, I appreciate the willing
helpfulness of our members, but would like to suggest that each and every one
of you who use a Mac
