Hi All I'm new to this list and wish to state my interest in the family of ROWLAND WILLIAMS circ.1835, I know that he was married to a MARGARET JONES circ.1835 and that they had a son JOHN WILLIAMS born May 1859 Tros-Y- Gors Waenfaw Llanbellie Caernarvonshire. John Williams Married MARY JANE DAVIES born 1858 in Conway, they were married in Caernarfon Registry Office in 1877, their marriage cert states that Rolland Williams was "Deceased" at that time. Hello List Today I found my great grandfathers grave in churchyard at LLanrhos, Llandudno. After clearing away Ivy and Bramble we found that the red marble headstone, all written in English was stood on top of a grey piece of stone with a Welsh inscription. Could anyone translate this for me please? There are 2 lines of writing some of the letters were hard to read. Line 1. YN Y OYFROEOD MAYVR AR TRONAU NOI OES LLEO A OOCIL FY MIII Line 2. The first quote is a line of a Welsh hymn: "Yn y dyfroedd mawr a'r tonnau, Nid oes neb a ddeil fy mhen." "In the great waters and waves, there is none to hold my head." (a silly aside, you have transcribed tonnau [waves] as tronau [underpants]!) Because of its popularity as a hymn to sing in the funeral services of the South Wales Valleys it is often known as "Emyn y Glowyr" - "The Collier's Hymn" I suspect that the second quote is also a couplet from a hymn, but I can't work out which one. My son is doing a school history project about the town of Conwy. One of the many attractions of the town is "Britain's Smallest House". Before it became a tourist attraction, one assumes that the smallest house was the ordinary dwelling of a poor family. The smallest house' residents must appear on some of the census returns. Hello List, I have just obtained a copy of my Great Uncle's death certificate. I have spent the last eight years looking all over the world for this, and then suddenly the entry / reference appeared on FreeBMD for Conway, and I obtained the death certificate. The COWL family had no connections to Wales, so Llandudno was the last place that I would have looked at! Some years ago I bought a small book about a fisherman named - you guessed it - Robert JONES. I know he lived in the house in 1900. I believe there is some information held at the Llandudno Reference Library. Can't remember now where I bought the book from. Have you looked at local newspapers? I found a murder and suicide in my family in 1884 and there are excellent reports in the local Welsh and English papers - all the gory details - a report of the inquest and a wonderful description of the interior of the farmhouse.
