On 27 Oct I ordered a certificate from the GRO for the first time so wasn't
sure when to expect delivery. This was for a certificate where I gave them
year, page, vol etc so I was hoping for a quick turnround.
Also sent off for two other certificates on 8 Nov which involve GRO
searching.
Having seen your message I'm not holding my breath now!

I have two family samplers, one done by my great great grandmother in 1817
and the other by her sister in 1834. They are silks embroidered on a fine
wool backing.
When I cleaned and remounted them what struck me was just how bright the
colours were on the reverse; beautiful blues, reds and greens. Most people
probably have the impression that samplers were sewn in very dull colours,
but that's because the majority they see are old and faded. However, when
they were first sewn the samplers must have been

I have recently discovered my grandmother's calling card (?for use when visiting in France) with the following details:
Miss G.W. BIRT, B.A.

Obviously she has studied a Bachelor of Arts, graduating with Honours in French at the University of Wales and this would probably have been around 1910. She also attended the Sorbonne in Paris (about 1908-10) but this may have been part of her BA s

William,
Your grandmother was probably working on some kind of needlework, although
not a sampler, as I understand it, which was normally a piece done by young
girls to demonstrate their adeptness at needlework -- often it would include
the alphabet and a homily of some kind or a biblical verse. The 'signature'
and date of the girl would also be stitched into the piece.
You have a very good memory to recall something so vividly from the age of
two! ;-)

Lizzie,
What wonderful treasures!!! How I wish I had something like those samplers
from my great-grandmothers (actually, I'd be happy if I had *anything* from
them)!
Thanks for sharing the details you found during your restoration/cleaning --
it may provoke someone else with similar samplers to view them in a new
light and look beyond the obvious.

This is a hoax that has been traveling the internet for a long time.

While your motive is good, this mailing list is for GENEALOGY ONLY! IF this
was reality-based, the appropriate place for this is the TV or newspapers.
Check Hoaxbusters.ciac.org or another site of similar purpose, the next time
you get something like this.

Just a word of warning. My aunt took the sampler my grandmotherhad worked
from its frame and it disintegrated. Obviously the light and or sun had done
their worst, so if you want to clean a sampler, take advvice first. Anne Stormont

I see from their entry on Parish Chest that Powys FHS has booklets for sale
containing transcriptions of the 1861 census. I would like to purchase one that
covered the area around Comins Coch, Cemaes and Cemaes Road, but I'm not sure
which one would be appropriate. The nearest that I can find has the
description "Machynlleth 1861 Census Part 4 Parishes of Darowen" - would this be the
correct booklet?
All the best

Hi John,
I usually receive my certificates less than two weeks from ordering. One
did take more than that to arrive. I haven't used the Standard Service.
Take care.

Has anyone recently ordered a certificate from the GRO?
On 30 Oct I ordered the birth certificate for Mary Elizabeth Humphreys,
of Llanwnog, (b. 12 Jan. 1864) giving them vol and pg information.
Because I gave them the info it goes on the 5 day service.
With delivery to the US of 4 days (normal), I should have received the
cert by Monday or Tuesday. As of yesterday, (Saturday) I've still
not received it. At the same time, I ordered the cert for Elizabeth
Humphreys of Llanwnog (b. 21 Apr 1847) on the Stand
