Dear fellow seekers: I descend from William Hancock who was a contemporary, and I believe, an associate of Captain John Woodlief. William Hancock was a member of The Virginia Company of London (Second Charter, 1609). According to an early history of the Hancock family, William sailed from Bristol on the Margaret on 15 Sep 1619, arriving at Jamestown 4 December. Listers, According to earlier Woodlief research by Eliz. Ann Taylor Kerman, Capt. John Woodlief (of Prestwood, Buckinghamshire,and later of VA) married on 01 May 1609 in Steventon, Berkshire, to Mary ARCHARD. Does anyone know the basis for the assumption that the John Woodlief who married in Steventon, Berkshire, is one and the same as the Capt John Woodlief of Prestwood, Buckinghamshire and (later) Virginia? I've not run across any evidence to link the two and am wondering if anyone else has. Has anyo

List Members, Has anyone located the WILL of Nicholas Woodliffe of Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, who died ca 1510?? I have TWO references to Nicholas, but have had no success in locating this document, so if anyone can help, I'd very much appreciate it. Well, that would be a "basis" - i.e., if we knew Capt. John's wife was named Mary (at the very least; better still that we knew her name was Mary Archard) AND if we knew she hailed from Steventon parish over in Berkshire. ;-) But to the best of my knowledge, we don't know any of those things. So I'm back to the original question.....on what BASIS - or by what logic - has it been "assumed" that the John Woodleffe who married in May 1609 over in Berkshire is the SAME John Woodleffe of Prestwood, Buckinghams

Hey Ann, Yes, these are Susan Myra Kingsbury's transcripts of the Virginia Company papers, they're online in several places but the easiest (and "free") access is through the Library of Congress site, within the: The Thomas Jefferson Papers Series 8. But as I read the Virginia Company materials (I will check JSTOR tomorrow), Woodleef was on the ship Margaret, not already here, and helped equip it and was addressed as the head of the expedition on the ship. 11 plus 1608 makes 1619. So when would he have gone back to do all that? And why do they call him Woodleef of Prestwood (or wherever--I forget right now) and not Woodleef of Jamestown? It was my understanding that he married in England and brought his family over here after the Margaret arrived.

Listers, Any descendants of the following Thomas Woodliff (a druggist), please contact me as I've run across something I am sure will be of interest. Thomas Woodliff was b ca 1837/8 in PA, relocating by 1860 to CA, and by 1900 to Nevada. His occupation was that of druggist. His son, Thomas (b ca 1867 in CA), also was a druggist in Nevada.
