Hi, Phil - we corresponded some time back about your William H., son of my
Susan Sanders and her husband Riley Y., who was Maryarter Sanders'
daughter. Good to "hear" from you again. Since you mention that Mary
Haslam's husband is a Sanders, I would really like to correspond with her to
exchange both Woodlief and Sanders info. I have a lot of Sanders info to
share. BTW, I have a new e-mail address - see below.

Does anyone happen to have information concerning CELESTIA Woodlief
who m. Benjamin WATKINS
4 Aug 1864 in Granville Co, NC?
i.e., where did Celestia and Benjamin live, and did they have children?
Has anyone run across more than one Celestia Woodlief?
Thanks,
Sandy

I was quite saddened to learn of his passing. I had recently met him and
was pleased at the family resemblance. I will miss him.

Hank,
Don't know if it helps, but I found another article about Deveraux -
this one by the folks at the San Jacinto Monument and Museum.....
go to: http://www.sanjacinto-museum.org/kemp/v894.html
This article doesn't mention Deveraux's being raised in Granville Co.
(altho it doesn't dispute that)
It does, however, say he was born VA in 1806, and moved to TX from
LOUISIANA in 1835, having received a Headright Certificate for
one-third of a league from the Washington County Board.
So I'm not sure w
There is a relatively new set of volumes out by the same folks who
did the Roster of Confederate Soldiers....this one is the Roster of

Great resource!
Anyway, today I ran across records for the Riley Y. folks, as well as

I finally made it to the Library of Virginia. This is what I found.
The letter to Washington was from Colonels Tabb and Cobbs in Amelia

Hi folks, got some word today on our elusive Thomas C. Woodlief, thought to
be of Washington County, TX in the 1850 census.
I haven't gotten to the Fort Worth archives to physically read the film
yet, and because the libraries all have a 100% transcription of the Texas
censuses, all I got was a copy of three pages (enumeration page, page
before and after) where our Thomas was located.
Turns out he is enumerated as:
#385, Thos. C. Woodley, 40, M, Mass, Farmer, $8000
Sebetha, 24, F, Tenn
E. C., 12, M,
Our thoughts are with his family.

Northampton County NC 1810 Census enumerates Peter Woodlief on pg 081.

The Harris Co Texas GenWeb site has up actual images of the 1860

I mentioned the Bute Co NC deeds in my previous message.
Here is what I have.
Remember the county formations in NC:
Bertie (formed 1722 from Chowan)
Edgecombe (formed 1741 from Bertie)
Granville (formed 1746 from Edgecombe)
BUTE (formed 1764 frm Granville, abolished in 1779)
Warren & Franklin (formed 1779 as new counties from the abolished Bute)
BUTE Co deeds:

WILLIAM CHAVERS, of Granville Co. 20 Pds. Va. money for 100 A. in

Thanks, Sheryl.
I have all the references you cited, but thanks for reminding me.
The problem is, there are as many George Woodliefs around as there
are Augustin/Augsutus.
And unfortunately, there don't seem to be enough marriage records
and/or wills and deeds to ensure they've been "sorted" properly. ;-)
If anyone has an Augustus Woodlief born ca 1850, I'd appreciate your
double-checking your sources as regards who his parents were,
because I have one within my branch that isn't very well accounted
Now Sandy, you know we won't let a little thing like N/S boundaries come
between us. lol. Yes, that's my Wm. H.. I also received a copy of a letter
signed by William H., written to a wife, advising her that her husband had
been accidentally killed, and the dispostion of his belongings.
This came to me from Mary Haslam, who's husband is a Sanders, which rlates
us.

Thomas C. Woodliefs name is spelled Woodlief in the 1850 census. You can
see that the I is dotted. His wifes name is Lebetha with an L. Look down
the page a little bit and you will see a Lucinda. The first letters are

the Virginia Thanksgiving Festival, passed away Jan. 20th, 2001, at

He will be sorely missed by all.

Well, Hank and all,
Today I took a look at the 1850 Washington Co TX Census film......
AND at the 1860 Harris Co, (Houston) census film.

I have learned some new facts that may help in my search -- my great
grandfather had 4 siblings (not 1) -- 2 brothers and 2 sisters. The two
children from his second wife move to New Jersey (e.g., my grandfather's 1/2
brother and sister), where their family remains. One was a war hero in
WWII.
I should have more soon from my uncle, Russell, but this was exciting, so I
thought I'd shoot it out here.

Hank,
Have you ever used AnyWho.com to search for people? go to
http://www.anywho.com and search a city and state for a surname and see what
comes up. It is really neat, gives you the address and phone number.

More ROBERT Woodliefs.....
in addition to the one cited in the volume of Letters to Washington,
I found in my notes two other references to ROBERTs.....

my Susan Sanders 2/17/1829 in Hawkins Co., TN. Susan was
the daughter of my husband's ancestor Maryarter Sanders b. 1799 NC, d. 1856
Clermont Co., OH. Riley Susan also moved to Clermont Co.
William H. Woodlief , b. 12/27/1839, was their son.
If anyone on this list has more information on this family, I would greatly

Ann,
This is wonderful! Thank you so much.
I'll add some Robert Woodlief info here.....and respond to the
Quesnell lawsuit in a separate message.
This Robert referenced in the letters of Washington would seem to be
the Robert Woodlief who leaves a will in Amelia Co in 1757.
The LVA online catalog lists a will of Robert Woodlief in Will Book 1.
It says on p. 123. Will pro. 27 Jan. 1757.
p. 123a. Inv. & Appr. rec. 24 Feb. 1757.
Do you think you could get a copy of that from LVA?
If so, maybe we will lear
