Hi all, more on Letha's gravesite. Looking into my records, she is
buried at the old Wilson Cemetery, just under the Granville border in
Wake County. I called it a Loyd cemetery, because a number of my Loyd
direct line are there. There are two other Loyd cemeteries, the oldest
about 3-4 miles up the road from the Wilsons. Also buried there is

Hi Sandy, et al;
I know a little bit about those Jackson Woodliff's.
First, the cemetary - its on a corner of what was great-great-grandfather
Woodliff's farm. Its rather overgrown now, though someone has kindly taken
to mowing it occasionally. I have pictures taken in the Fall of '99 that
could be scanned. Wish I knew which of the two farms truly was
great-great-grandfather's. I know my great-grandparents were married there.
The following is what I know of the Woodliffs of Jackson County, Michig

Does anyone have reasonable access to the statewide 1860 INDEX of the
Virginia census?
If so, could you please do a lookup for Miles to find out what
counties show a JOHN Woodlief, and also an ARIE (or something similar

This John and Arie (siblings) were born ca 1850s, so should be in the
household of their parents....which might be in the vicinity of
Lynchburg, but he's not sure about that. The attempt here is to
discover their parents and possible other siblings.

Woodlief Listers,
I've had several private responses to this message.
Several of you have asked if we can find out more about this court
case. My answer is "I don't know." ;-)
I am not sure how much of the material of old cases is kept, or WHERE
it is kept.
I gather from the numbering of this entry that it was a 1796 case.
I also don't know the nature of the case - Quesnel v. Woodlief -
however, it appears the merchant, Mr. Quesnel, was suing one of the
Woodlief families cited. This is strictly a gue

Can anyone tell me more about the TEXAS Woodliefs?
There seem to be numerous ones down there who trace back to North
Carolina.... but I cannot figure out if they were connected when they
were in NC???
I am particularly interested in learning more about Deveraux J.
Woodlief whose parents were Thomas Woodlief and Elizabeth CLAIBORNE
.... who apparently were in PETERSBURG, VA when Deveraux was born in
1806...but who moved to GRANVILLE CO, NC to raise him.
This seems to mean that there's a Thomas Woodli

Woodleif, Sarah & Austin HEATH, 07 May 1786; Prince George Co.

Surry/Sussex area of Virginia."
Sorry, but I don't know anything more at this point.

Listers,
I have been in touch with Elizabeth Ann Taylor Kerman, whose
published her book on the Woodlief genealogy back in 1987.
Mrs. Kerman says to contact her if you are interested in obtaining a
copy. She can print additional copies from her computer. I would
prefer any communications concerning cost be made directly between
those who are interested and Mrs. Kerman herself.
She may be reached via email at:

I do not have that access -- it is a great idea. I found a site that had
it, but Lynchburg (an independent city I believe) was not included.
The marriage license is a great idea as well!!! Thanks

Ann,
I agree. I don't think I mentioned John Jr, did I?
Maybe its better to spell out senior, although the thing is, there
are so many Johns in a row there, it's probably better to just label
them a , b, and c.
At Sion Hill:
John (senior) whose will was 11 Feb 1737...
his children:
1. John Jr. (eldest) will dated 17 Feb 1775)
2. Peter
(children of Peter):
2a. John (will dated (will dated 4 Feb 1777)
2b. Peter
2c. Thoma
for those of us who are new to this, can you list the sites we can look to
for information -- I am in the process of gathering information which should
take my branch back to the early or mid 19th century, but will then need
resources belong my elders memories . . .
Thanks,

My apologies.
Is everyone familiar with the "IGI" (the International Genealogical
Index) which is maintained by the LDS (Mormon) Church?
Also, the LDS has what is called "Ancestral File" - which is where
people submit their family histories as they compile them.
Also, the LDS has millions of records filmed which you can borrow at
local LDS "Family History "Centers" - which are open for the use of
the public....you need not have any affiliation with the LDS Church

You can order a copy of the film from any LDS Family History Center.

I think the film is probably the best bet.

Please do me a favor and "re-think" something here.
The fact is, I have an Augustus L. Woodlief, who by a family Bible
record was born 16 Sept 1850 in Granville Co, NC>
He was the son of Charles Woodlief and Sally G. Merritt.
Now...... for whatever reason (probably not knowing anyone of this

HE DID NOT.
He is alive in the 1860 census, age 12, in Franklin Co/Franklinton,

Which "tree" are you looking at?
If you're talking about the book by Eliza. Kerman, I don't find the
marriage of Sarah Woodlief and Austin/Augustine Heath in there.
It was probably just a marriage that someone had missed.
However, I have a strong hunch this Sarah who married (07 May 1786;
Prince George Co ) Austin(prob. Augustine) HEATH probably was a
sister of Thomas, John and Peter Woodlief....i.e., the children of
Peter....who was the son of John Sr. whose will was dated (or
proved?) 11
As I read that will, John Jr. of Sion Hill did not have children; he
had nephews.

Several "default" settings for listmail were altered during a recent
server change at Rootsweb, but they have now been restored.
Most of these don't affect you, but there are one or two you need to
be aware of.
I've restored the [WOODLIEF] pre-pend which should now show up on all

mail from this list, and also to set up a filter on your computer, if
you wish, to direct list mail to a particular "mailbox."
