Hello All!
I am looking for any great sites or tips on a possible adoption from Virginia to Webster County, WV around 1863. It is possible that my great grandfather was adopted out of Virginia. I am also thinking around the age of 7 or so. I can find him on census records at the age of 17 living with a Kelley family; but have been unable to locate him at the age of 7. If he was adopted according to a distant relative, it would make sense why I can't find him. I was also told that he could have been bo
This may give you a clue. There were a large number of orphan homes
created for Civil War orphans. If you query the individual counties'
historical societies, they can let you know if there were one locally.
It's good to remember too that Virginia before the War included all of
what became West Virginia (and, even earlier, also the territory that
became Kentucky).
Then, too, the Virginia Archives in Richmond are legendary for their
stores of info. I've had the folks at National Archives refer me to
I should have mentioned that Volentine WOODS and Mary
NEALY's children were:
William - died young no issue
Robert T.
John N.
Elizabeth (STEWART)
James
Lewis - no known children
Eliza (LEE)(TURNER)
Mary Margaret (BLACK)
Perry
Preston
Anna (BAIRD)
Volentine C.
Minerva (MAYNES)
The main lines that show up at the reunions are Robert
T.'s; John N.'s; Mary Margaret's; and now Volentine
C.'s.
If you're from one of the other lines come and get
acquainted with us; we want to meet you.

I have seen the work of this company and it is awesome. They will take photos
of anyone, including old family photos, and make a CD of the pictures with
captions. I saw one they had made and it was a thumbnail sketch of the
owner's grandpa done in pictures and it was great. She will also do
restoration work on old family photos at a reasonable price. I have one I am
going to get her to do for me. It was taken in the 1860's. She also did a
video of my cousin's wedding in November but I haven't gotten t
It is only on rare occasions that I add a book to the list of "must haves"
for the study of Scotch-Irish genealogy. This one is for our friends with
Pennsylvania connections and it is certainly a rare item. Published in 1856
"by a descendant" it is titled:

Irish and Scotch Early Settlers of Pennsylvania," Chambersburg, Pa.,

I also am seeking an adoption which took place in 1882. I have more
details, but it isn't easy. Have you sent for the social security record
yet? You must get that before you proceed any further. If your grandfather
ever knew who his birth parents names were; then he would have recorded that
information on his social security application along with the exact place of
his birth including the town. It helped me a lot. Even the man's wife (in
my case) did not know specific details, and he didn't fill in

Thought I would pass on an early invite to the
Volentine C. WOODS Family Reunion. This year we will
be returning to Indiana for the first time since the
family left in the 1850's.
The Reunion is 25-27 July 2003. This year the Reunion
will be split into two locations. We will start in
Rising Sun, IN on Friday night the 25th and in the
morning of the 26th we will head out to the Cemetery
in Pate, IN where Volentine's parents (John WOODS and
Mary LITTLE), some of his siblings, and even one child
is buried.
