Is there an 1800 census for Berkley, Va and would anyone be able to check
for a Michael Shinnaberry. I have just recently
learned that he was in Berkley. He may be my 4th great grandfather, but I
need to know the age of this man and how many were in the household. Thanks
for any help.

Bev,
I wish I could type all of these up for you right now,
but I have been swamped with requests and tried to answer
everyone but some are too extensive. There are
Kershners/Kerschners listed on five different pages in
this book. If I haven't given you the information for
ordering the book from the Berkeley County Historical
Society, I would be glad to send it.
Sorry for not being able to do it at this time but I am
swamped with too many things right now. Let me know-

Dear Karen,
Morgantown isn't near Berkeley Co.WV. It is in Monongalia County and is
south of Pittsburgh, PA. Berkeley Co. is in the eastern panhandle of WV
between Hagerstown, MD, and Winchester VA on interstate 81. It is the part
of WV that is only one county wide and deep and I81 here is about 26 miles in
length.

Hello, Mollie-
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I
mentioned Morgantown. I think I had Martinsburg in the back of my mind,
because two of the Moriarty brothers wrote letters to the Martinsburg Gazette
in the mid-1840s.
Would you know if pages 143-154 of the 1840 census cover the area near
Martinsburg? I seem to recall that when I went through these pages the name
TABLER came up. I notice that there is a village called Tabler's Station
southwest of Martinsbu
Hello,
I'm new to this list and am researching a cluster of MORIARTY and
connected families ( LEAHYs, LANDERS, HOLLANDs, MURPHYs, ) who immigrated to
the Cumberland MD and Berkeley Co. WVA area sometime in the 1830s, possibly
earlier. Several MORIARTY families appear in the Berkeley Co 1840 census,
appearing with variant spellings of the surname ( Maratty,
Moratty,Murreyafthy (?) ).Maurice and Florence Moriarty both are listed on
page 143, and Daniel appears on page 144, in the midst of a long li

Ann,
Can I impose uon you to look for a listing for a Isabelle Jane Myers..or
Kershner?
I know that she was born around 1853 and lived all her life in
Martinsburg. She was married to George Edwin Kershner.
She is my great grandmother...no one in the family seems to know
anything about her.
Thanks,

Dot,
Sorry for the delay but I checked all of the Stewarts
(even checked the one Steward-it was a male)and there are
no listings for a Maria or Maria C. Could they have lived
somewhere else between Martinsburg and their appearance
in Danville? Or, could she have died in the Danville area
just before the census was taken? Have you checked the
1850 Mortality Schedule for PA? That encompasses folks
that died the year before the census was taken so she
might show up on that. Good Luck!

Ann,
Does your book list anyone who could have been the first wife of
James Morris b. March 1, 1763 d. March 7, 1844
She bore him 14 children. I don't know her name.
By 1805 she had died and so had 12 of her children.
I'm guessing that the time period here would be 1780 to 1805
in Berkeley County.
Thank you
Julie

Checked the index but alas, no Sheelers! Do you know
where John Sheeler is buried - would that be a clue? Of
course, she may be buried in a Berkeley Co.cemetery but
without a stone or perhaps no record of the burial. FYI,
I checked what I thought might be variations of the
spelling but can't see anything even remotely close -
what about Jefferson Co.?
