Josiah's firstborn son, Charles J. Davis, died on 8-13-1902 and was buried in Brooke Cemetery on 8-15-1902. The undertaker was T. H. Marks of Wellsburg. I just received a copy of an article that ran in the July 22, 1907 "Wheeling Intelligencer" newspaper about the murder of my great-grandfather PIERCE DAVIS. He was shot by EDWARD LOCKHART, the man who stole Pierce's first wife (Martha) away from him. Apparently Ed and Martha had just moved to Cross Creek, living near Pierce's farm, and it appeared that Martha's feelings towards Pierce were resurrected. Ed shot Pierce, who was unarmed, and fled.
