Hancock County History
Hancock County was created by an act of the General Assembly on January
15,
1848 from parts of Brooke County. It is the smallest county in the state
(88.55
square miles). It was named in honor of John Hancock (1737-1793). He was born
on January 12, 1737 in Quincy, Massachusetts, was a leader in the American
Revolution, served as Pr

The road going into Kings Creek is off of Route 2 just before you reach the
city of Weirton. I have a boss who lives there and his mailing address is
actually New Cumberland. They are side by side, so either description
would be correct.

Death records in Hancock County, WV, are within the time period you
mentioned. It is possible, however, that the person(s) you are looking for
died across the river in Ohio. I would write to the Hancock Co. Courthouse in
New Cumberland, WV, and ask them to do the search. Death records for that
time period are also on film in Salt Lake....so if you're near a Family
History Center, you can order the film from there.

Hello All,
If you don't have time this week or the gasoline budget to visit
cemeteries,- try this interesting site where you can search (by name,
location, or date) for grave sites around the world. (Mostly the
famous).

You can even view their grave markers if the symbol is next to their
name.

There is a new service available by Charlie Harris at the Morgantown
Libraries. You can view his site and write directly to him for price
quotes at:

We all know how inconvenient it is to look for an obit in a newspaper
which is no longer available in our local libraries of WV. Mr. Harris
can do this service as well as many others as Morgantown is the
repository for these records.

Hello,
Regarding the Weirton City limits in regard to Kings Creek Road.
As someone who lived on Kings Creek Road in my young married days, and
still have friends who live on this road - Kings Creek is the dividing
line of Weirton City limits. Those who live north of it are Rural
Delivery (RD), Box #, Weirton and do not have city conveniences and
utilize county officials for fire, & etc. Those who live up on
Swearingen Hill, Hudson Hill, Riverview Estates & etc. still have a

Hi Jean,
Although some of these may be films that can be ordered by a local
genealogical society, for the most part they remain at the State archives
in Charleston, WV. They do have people who will research a request, and
they will copy pages of the public records and mail them for a fee. Hope
this helps with your questions.

Hi Everyone,
I've received a notice that it is possible to have the things that are
posted to the genconnect boards to show up here automatically. This means
that when someone posts an obituary, will, pension record, etc. to the
boards, it will post here too. I'm in the process of getting this set up,
and once it is working, would like to know what you think of it. Please
send your comments via private email though. Thanks for sharing your opinion.
Happy Hunting,
Janet

Hi:
I read with interest the exchanges about acquiring Hancock County death
certificates. I also noticed that it had been suggested that you could
write to the Hancock County courthouse & ask them to do a search for the
death certificates (without having the death dates). Will they do this
for you? I hadn't been asking any courthouse to do this as I was told
that the county clerk in my home county (which probably should be left
unnamed!) had told his people that they weren't to do this for anyone.

Hello List,
Is there anyone on list that can tell me the parameters for locating a death
certificate?
I am trying to get any information on David GRIMM and his wife Esther
(Hester) WHIPKEY of Clay District, Hancock County, WVA.(1910).
I have tried several sources to locate this family and the only luck I had
was the 1910 census. At that time they were both approaching 60 years, so my
guess is they died between then and 1930, although one elderly relative told
me David lived to be about 85 she thought.

Hello Joel & All,
Regarding area obits. The earliest newspapers available in microfilm
for research is the Steubenville, OH papers. They are on microfilm at
Schiappa Library near the Fort Steuben Mall and start in 1806. Only the
social elite were given space until around 1880's when many area
individuals would be included. But those that paid a fee could be
included in the earlier papers.
It wasn't uncommon to see information on residents as far away as
Eldersville, PA; Colliers, Wellsburg, Holiday Co
