Free in Chains
by Mary B. Kegley, author, attorney, and researcher
"Based on a true story filed in court papers, Free in Chains tells the
unimaginable story of an Indian slave, Rachel Findlay. Although Indian
slavery was illegal in Virginia at the time and Rachel was freed from those

Happy New Years to all of you. Does anyone have a site for maps of the
states and counties. I need one badly and can't find a site. Thanks. Rick Stewart
I vaguely remember reading about an early tradition in the UK, don't
remember which country, about dabbing a "spot of cream" on a person's nose
on the birthday. Don't know when, where I read it or anything else about
it. I love early english history & read everything I can on it, when I have
the time away from genealogy. It sounds like the Irish though - they have
such a sense of fun & frivolity.

I am looking for any information about my great grandfather and great grandmother who lived in Bluefield, WV.
He died in bluefield and is buried in a cemetery on top of a hill just outside town. I do not know where the ceme. is. My grandfather who was born in Bluefield returned several years ago, but was unable to locate the grave. I am sure there are cousins and such that still live in that area but I have not been able to locate any of them or anyone who might be of help.
Jasper James was his name and Eli
My mother was born in Berwind WVA and my Father was born in Bluefield.
Every birthday my mother would somehow surprise us and put butter on our
noses! She is 91 and still tries to do it!

I just went to the archives and read other entries regarding nose buttering/ traditions. I read one where ,on Christmas , someone yealled Christmas Gift early in the morning.
When I was little , my grandfather, who lived his whole life in Princeton , would get up at 6am , and go through the bedrooms and shout "Christmas Gift! Christmas Gift!" until we all were awake. Then he would go back to bed. I am sure it was something he had done as a child.
Have enjoyed this discussion.

I Mercer Kids, I had forgotten about the buttered nose. I was youngest
so i always was buttered faced on Christmas which was my brithday. Thank
you all for the memorery. I'm 75 now and that was along time ago. I
think it was an area thing rather then family. I am a mixed breed with

We also had a traditionat Christmas time for about before Christmas of
being the first each day to "get' CHRISTMAS GIFT on everyone. We would
yell it when we woke up,
Nose buttering on a birthday is a very popular tradition in my family! It has set us apart from other families. Friends and extended family are very flattered when we include them in this tradition.
I was born and raised in Princeton. We have always wondered where the tradition came from. My parents could not remember when it started or from which family it started. (My mother was raised in Bluefield - {name Smith }Her family came from Big Stone Gap, Va. - My father's family {name Bruce} came to the Prin
Hi,
I'm doing some research on my line of the Thompson family. My great
grandfather was Harold J. Thompson b. 1901 d. 1973 m. Lola Stone. His
father was Buren Grant Thompson b. 1881 d. 1975 m. Louise Stanley.
According to census records ranging from 1900 to 1930, they moved
between the counties of Mercer, Logan, and Mingo. As of the 1930 census
Buren Grant Thompson was a constable in Mercer County. Harold was a
miner most of his life. Buren's father was George Washington Thompson
who lived in Mer
I was also born in Mercer County, Princeton. My parents were born in
Princeton and Tazewell County, Va. We have always celebrated birthdays by buttering
the nose. I now pass it on to my son who thinks it is silly. I am going to ask
my parents where they got the idea from.

One more tradition! I asked my Mother who is 91 about the nose buttering
tradition. She said "yes" butter your nose and roll you under the bed! I
asked her what it all meant but she didn't know. She was born in WVA and
raised in Pike County, KY. Anyone heard of this one??
