Out of curiosity, were all records kept at the county level or were there
duplicates kept at the state level in Charleston? My dad asked in Hamlin about
a birth record for his dad but of course they were burned. The woman at the
court house assisting him suggested he try in Charleston. He has yet to get
around to doing that.
Thanks

Does anybody have access to the Will Book or Will index for Putnam Co around the 1890 to 1910 Range.
I'm looking for my GG Grandfather James A. Philips will. He died in 1901.

The county clerk has a busy plate...you may need to go to Winfield yourself
and look through EVERYTHING in the right time frame. There may be a misspelling
or a problem with how the event was recorded. The record is only as good as
the clerk who wrote it down. OR the death was just not recorded for some
reason. Could she have di
Brian:
I had just the opposite experience. EVERYTHING is there, except my grandpa's
birth record. My GGG's will is there, his death record for 1861 and so many
more of the connected families' information. The stuff at the Archives was
recorded by the LDS church onto microfilm, which helps a great deal, but it's only
as good as what was at the court house at the time of recording the films.
I have always been able to go right to the court house itself and find the
information. Sometimes it was tricky t
Hello list,
I am in a predicament. I have in my possession several old pics that belong to Dolly Sovine Meadows, who got most of the pictures from her father, William Arnold Sovine.
I do not know, nor does she, who several photos are. If anyone is interested in viewing/identifying any of these pics I can e-mail them to you. Some pictures I has are high school and grade school pictures of people who went to school with my Mom,
Lana Meadows Berry Easter. The dates on the grade school photos are 1957-58. an

She was born in October of 1850 according to the 1900 Census.
She was born in Putnam Co, then VA. She married James Allen Philips on Nov

understanding. James Allen Philips was born December 15, 1833 in Kanawha
County and died February 01, 1901 in Putnam County. According to the Death
Register. He is said to be buried in McGill Cemetery but later I find this

Brian, Death records in Putnam even for the first years of the 20th
century are sometimes pretty sketchy. My grandfather died in Putnam in
1918 and there is no record of his death. My maternal great grandmother
died there about 1920-21 and my maternal grandmother died there in 1941
and there are no records. In all these cases, I
I do not know if it might still be available by reprint or not, but The
Lincoln County Genealogical Society published (1985--copyright by Sue
Linville Roberts) Lincoln County's Delayed Birth Records 1866-1899. The
author used birth records on file at the Division of Archives and History in
Charleston and she said that the original information came from a computer
list from the State Department of Vital Statistics. I have the book and
could look up a name or two if that would help.

Does anybody know any other ways I can find the death of my gg grandmother Mary Frances McGraw-Philips.
She does not have a death record that I can find. I know she died sometime between 1905 & 1910.
I would try to find her in the cemetery in which she was burried, but this cemetery has been raided of its
headstones and proves worthless because of this. I can't find a death record although I haven't tried
to send a letter to the County Clerk. I know she is not in the death record register microfilm I hav
Has anybody send a Letter for a request of a death or birth to the Putnam County Clerks Office?
There website fee list and so on seems a bit confusing to me.
I'm not sure what to do exactly.

Lora, my husband's family is from Lincoln County. I've not found copies
of the original records on file in Charleston, however, there are
delayed birth certificates available there. The delayed birth
certificates became necessary when folks needed to file for social
security and the original records had been destroyed. You might try the
State Archives. I've had some success in finding delayed birth
certificates there. Jean

Brian, my grandfather was born in Putnam in 1910 - no record of birth. The records for the years you mention in Putnam county are sketchy. Since my grandfather applied for and received a SS#, his mother signed an affidavit of his birth. That doesn't help you.
Who was the minister who married Mary McGraw and James Philips? I may recognize the name and tell you where he Pastored - that will help pin them to a locale.
The McGraw's/McGrew's settled the areas between 18 mile Creek and Poca River along the Kana
