[ADAMS-JOHN-HOBBS] Magoffin County, Kentucky, 1860 census

I've got an interesting dilemma, that I'm hoping someone here can help with:

Gilbert Adams, born 1804, dying 1888 in Magoffin County, Kentucky is not hard to find linked as a son of Stephen and Mary (Webb) Adams.

This Gilbert is said to have married Nancy Adams, resulting in at least 2 sons, Preston (b. about 1833) and Gilbert (b. about 1823, but is this the correct Gilbert?).

Here's my problem:

The 1860 census in Magoffin County lists Gilbert Sr, Preston and ... 2 Gilberts.

One of the Gilberts is born about 1827 and married to a Perlina (it's not hard to find gedcoms attributing him as a son to William T. Adams, but is there documentation to support that?).

Does anyone know for sure who the "other Gilbert" (b. about 1823/4) is?

Part of my answer to that question is that he married at least twice: 1) America Cooper and 2) Sarah Alexander (Knox County, Indiana).

This 2nd Gilbert is easy to find in gedcoms as Gilbert Jr., son of Gilbert Sr. and Nancy. I don't think that's the case, and this is what I'm hoping someone can help with.

The 1860 census has this 2nd Gilbert married to an America, with several children in the household. The last entry evidently got incorrectly transcribed early in the "finding our roots" process as Alex G. Adams, born about 1860. The record actually says that this person was 76 years old (thus born about 1793-4).

America evidently died between 1860 and 1870, because Gilbert is married 24 August 1864 in Knox County, Indiana to Sarah Alexander. One of the sons of this 2nd marriage, William Gilbert Adams, born 1865, is my wife's Great Grandfather.

The 1870 census in Knox County, Indiana has several of the same children for Gilbert as the 1860 census in Magoffin County, Kentucky, including Gilbert and America's sons, William Preston and James Buchanan Adams.

With "Preston" showing up as a given name again as "my" Gilbert's oldest son, it's extremely likely that all 3 Gilberts of the 1860 census in Magoffin County are related. My question is if "my" Gilbert was not the son of Gilbert and Nancy, and likely a son of Alex G. Adams, who IS Alex G. Adams, born about 1794??

Has a son of Stephen and Mary (Webb) Adams been missed (not likely as they married after this Alex's birth), or was Stephen married more than once (not likely if 1778 is correct for his birth), or is Alex possibly Stephen's nephew?

Of course, it may simply be that Alex G. Adams was not "my" Gilbert's father at all, even though included in Gilbert's household in 1860, or, it may be that I'm still not interpreting the census entry correctly.

I'm betting that one of those scenarios needs to be established, but have no idea as to which one, at this point.

Since I'm not finding any Alex G. Adams born about 1793/4 listed in gedcoms, I'm betting I'm asking questions that are fairly fresh to the discussion of John Hobbs Adams' family.

Thanks!!

Joe Hittle
husband of Sandra K. (Adams) Hittle
daughter of Berl Edward Adams
granddaughter of Clara May (Adams) and James William Adams (no relation to each other)
great granddaughter of William Gilbert and Susan (Wallace) ((Myers)) Adams
2G-Granddaughter of Gilbert and Sarah (Alexander) Adams.

I've learned that if I don't do it that way that the list server takes my responses and chews them up in such a way that when I come back to printed messages, it's hard for me to tell what the flow of the conversation was.

Tami Phillips <tphillips@jasocal.org> wrote:1) Too funny Cousin Joe!

2) My database needs reloaded on my new computer, but off the top of my head, I didn't realize John Hobbs was the wife of Nancy Caudill. Could this have been a second marriage for her?

3) Most of my verifiable records stop with William Adams who died in Warrensberg, Missouri hiding from Bushwackers in the 1860's. Unfortunately I have yet to verify his true father. There were so many Adams and Caudill's who moved from NC to MO, it is hard to keep track of them all. I went to MO two summers ago to do some research, but many of the court records were destroyed during the Civil War. I wish they were a little more original with all of their first names. It sure would be a lot easier for those of us who do family research.

4) What part of the country do you live in?

5) Hope to chat with you soon.

6) Tami Minton Phillips
Stevenson Ranch, CA
(When we were evacuated from the CA fires a few weeks ago, my genealogy research was one of the first things we packed in the car :) )
1) Very good, it appears that I may have gotten off to a good start!!

2) The information about John Hobbs Jr and Nancy Caudill comes from gleaning online "stuff" and trying to make the best of it. The only clue to which Nancy Caudill this was is a couple of hints that her father may have been a Benjamin Caudill. I haven't even attempted to backtrace the Caudill connections yet. There are many gedcoms that have John Hobbs Sr. married to "Ann Caudill" but the "Ann Stephens" version simply fits better, especially if "our" link to the John Hobbs family indeed does go through Stephen Adams.

In other words, there's lots of room for there to be incompletion or downright error in what I think I've found. On the other hand, my current understanding doesn't appear to have any holes that would cause me not to investigate further.

On the other hand, I'm also a long way from declaring that there might not be a better interpretation.

3) Sandy's link back to Gilbert Jr (Sandy, Berl, Clara Mae, William Gilbert, Gilbert Jr) is very workable from Knox County, Indiana records. It appears that Gilbert Jr came from Magoffin County, Kentucky to Knox County, Indiana in time for the 1860 census. He appears in Magoffin County with his first wife, America Cooper, in the 1850 census in Magoffin. As always, from there further back begins to get not quite so black and white.

It is very possible that Sandy's grandfather, William Gilbert, may also have been known simply as Gilbert. He's a bit of a mystery in that he appears to have either died outside of Knox County (one version is that he left the county and remarried sometime after the 1920 census) or else died a pauper in Knox County, in which case Knox County did not do official probates on people of such official status. Some are saying that William Gilbert (who is found in his son James household in 1920) later moved in with his daughter, Clara Mae (Sandy's grandmother). It's weird that no one seems to know how or where he ended up.

The Gilbert Sr. and Nancy (Adams) Adams connection appears to link up with the Webb and Boone families, which is why I don't think that Gilbert and Nancy were blood relatives in any way that's easily traceable. Maybe I missed something.

4) Sandy and I married in Knox County, Indiana in 1974. Her paternal Adams line goes back to a George Adams out of Pennsylvania who came to Knox county before 1800. George was an Irish (probably actually Ulster-Irish) immigrant from 1750 arrival. Her folks had moved to northern Indiana and lived there from 1960-1971. They attended "my" church, and so we've known each other since before either of us began 1st grade.

We now live in Iowa, about 30 miles southeast of DesMoines.

5) Looking forward to that

6) Fires scare me. I grew up in 40 acres of woods in Northern Indiana, and it seemed like about every 4th year we were backfiring our lanes to keep somebody's flipped cigarette from devouring us. Hopefully you have someplace to move back into!

Thanks for the welcome!

Joe Hittle
skadj@yahoo.com
www.hittle.info

---------------------------------
Never miss a thing.
Don't shoot quite yet, I'm an in-law! :-)

I'm Joe Hittle, Husband of Sandra Kay Adams who is the:

daughter of Berl Edward Adams
Granddaughter of Clara Mae (Adams) and James William Adams (no relation)
Great Granddaughter of William Gilbert and Susan (Wallace) ((Myers)) Adams
2G-Granddaughter of Gilbert (Jr) and Sarah (Alexander) Adams
3G-Granddaughter of Gilbert (Sr) and Nancy (Adams) Adams (no relation I have found)
4G-Granddaughter of Stephen and Mary (Webb) Adams
5G-Granddaughter of John Hobbs (Jr) and Nancy (Caudill) Adams
6G-Granddaughter of John Hobbs (Sr) and Ann (Stephens) Adams

This only works, of course, if I haven't made any misinterpretations of my findings, or those of other people, over the course of my research into the family.

I'm "finding" the possibility that John Hobbs Adam's Sr's parents were Benjamin and Agnes (Ezell) Adams somewhat intriguing.
Hello:
I think I was on this list before but am ready to try again!!
Here is my story:
James Adams was born in TN 1799 (according to census)
he died just before 1850 (dang it) in Ray County MO.
He married Catherine Thomas b. Madison is the son of Moses Cummins Jr. and Catherine Shields who are part of the "Cummins Mystery". They came from Rockingham Co, VA. Patsy's parents were John Davis and Leah Harris of VA. Benjamin and Lodusky were married 5 Sept 1859 in Ray County, MO. Lodusky Jane died 25 Nov 1911 in Union Star (at her oldest son John Henry Ulysses Adams home( Mary Gottschall was his wife). I don't know how to find any proof of it because it was too early. James was in MO in 1835. The indians were not moving yet. Unless..his mother belonged to the Eastern Band of Cherokee, does anyone on this list know anything about them?
We have a cousin in Fayetteville NC (just discovered) that has they old pictures of Great Aunt Sylvia Adams Kelly, in those pictures is a picture of an indian woman and her husband. I have not seen it yet, but may have to go to NC to make copies.
I am very interested in finding out who the THomas' were also, anyone on here that this sounds familiar to?
Samuel MAdison Adams hd a son , his 4th child names John H. Free indicates no
cost. It seems to me that you are deliberately trying
to confuse the readers with information that is
manifestly not true. So, can you tell me how I can get
the online services for free?

Posted by: David lee | June 02, 2007 at 11:10 AM

David, these services, which normally require a fee,
will be offered for free when accessing them from a
Family History Center.

Posted by: Geoff Rasmussen | June 02, 2007 at 11:33 AM

____________________________________________________________________________________
Building a website is a piece of cake.
