<description>Richard,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My experience with early deeds Western New York and Michigan is similar to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Susan and others. The property description &#x22;floats&#x22; and isn&#x27;t tied back to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the original survey. Subsequent re-surveys ultimately correct the problem.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The solution is to locate the adjacent deeds and plot them as a group much&#x3C;BR&#x3E;like you do with a metes and bounds problem. Sometimes the property&#x3C;BR&#x3E;description will be amended or corrected in subsequent transfers. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Here&#x27;s an example:   &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Land in Town of Pompey, Lot 12, beginning at SW  corner of the land&#x3C;BR&#x3E;purchased by David Scovil of Jabez Gidley; S on N-S Road 11 rds; E 8 rds; N&#x3C;BR&#x3E;11 rds to S line of Scovil land; W on S line 8 rds to POB. [Onondaga County&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Deeds, Book E:289]  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The original survey is part of the New York Military Tract. Lot 12 is about&#x3C;BR&#x3E;600 acres. The above 1798 transaction involves about 1/2 acres somewhere in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the greater lot. Although the deed describes a perfect 11 x 8 rectangle of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;land, it is ambiguous for several reasons - we don&#x27;t know where Scovil&#x27;s&#x3C;BR&#x3E;property lies in Lot 12 nor do we know where the north-south road passes&#x3C;BR&#x3E;thorough. I don&#x27;t know how the title was ultimately resolved in this case&#x3C;BR&#x3E;but something to the effect of &#x22;beginning at a point 50 rds south and 50&#x3C;BR&#x3E;west of the northeast corner of Lot 12...&#x22; would resolve the problem.    &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Jan Tripp&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Ann Arbor, MI&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;  .&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;  -------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;  To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; APG-request@rootsweb.com&#x3C;mailto:APG-request@rootsweb.com&#x3E; with the word &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x27;unsubscribe&#x27; without the quotes in the subject and the body of the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; message&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; .&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; -------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; APG-request@rootsweb.com with the word &#x27;unsubscribe&#x27; without the quotes in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; the subject and the body of the message &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;-------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;APG-request@rootsweb.com with the word &#x27;unsubscribe&#x27; without the quotes in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the subject and the body of the message&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Richard,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I read Barbara&#x27;s initial question to be whether or not one needed&#x3C;BR&#x3E;precise angles/degree info in order for deed plotting software to be&#x3C;BR&#x3E;useful.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I&#x27;ve been looking at land records in the area around Middletown, CT. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;primarily pre-Revolutionary War records. Many don&#x27;t include angles, etc&#x3C;BR&#x3E;in the property description. They do include landmarks, neighbors, and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;basic directions (N, E, W, S). I&#x27;ve been following this discussion with&#x3C;BR&#x3E;great interest, because I, also, would like to find a tool to help me&#x3C;BR&#x3E;integrate these records and wonder in what ways deed plotting software&#x3C;BR&#x3E;would help.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;some examples (still wrestling with some transcription problems, noted&#x3C;BR&#x3E;with brackets):&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;@1726, Middletown Land Records 02:388 (Robert Hubbard to Josiah Cook)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;(LDS film 0004792): &#x22;the equal third part of a certain lotment of Land&#x3C;BR&#x3E;within ye township affore said Middletown; on ye East Side of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Conecticott River In the Great Lotts which third part containeth eighty&#x3C;BR&#x3E;three acres &#x26; half an acre more or less. Being bounded easterly on&#x3C;BR&#x3E;undivided Land, westerly on ye Great River Northerly on a lot origenally&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Wm Lucas.s. and Southly on George Hubbards Land a part of ye same Lot&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and [?] third part is twenty one rods &#x26; two thirds of a Rod broad. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;there being allowance for convenient th[?] [?] highways&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1764, Middletown Land Records 20:212 (Joseph Parke to Reuben Cook) (LDS&#x3C;BR&#x3E;film 0004802): &#x22;one certain piece of Land lying in the Parish of Middle&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Haddam in said Middletown containing twenty rods of Land lying four Rods&#x3C;BR&#x3E;wide Northerly and Southerly and five Rods long Easterly and Westerly,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and is bounded Easterly on a Highway, Northerly on Joshua[Joshia?]&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Cook&#x27;s Land, Westerly and Southerly on my own Land&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1794, East Hampton Land Records 08:064 (Josiah Cook to Amos Steele) (LDS&#x3C;BR&#x3E;film 1378221): &#x22;one certain peace of land lying in said Chatham and is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Deliniated as follws (viz) Beginning at the Northwest corner of the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;peace now sold, at a heap of stones in the south line of Hoziah smiths&#x3C;BR&#x3E;land Run South 14 Degs, East Eighteene Rods to a heap of stones then&#x3C;BR&#x3E;East 2 degs South Nineteene Rods and Eight links to a heap of stones in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the line of sd Amos Steeeles land. then North 171/2 degs West Nineteene&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Rods and fifteene links to the Northwest Corner of said Amos Steeles&#x3C;BR&#x3E;land then West 3 degs South Eighteene Rods &#x26; three links to the first&#x3C;BR&#x3E;mentioned Corner. Containing two acres &#x26; Twenty two Rods of land and is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;bounded North on Hoziah Smith land West and south on my own Land &#x26; East&#x3C;BR&#x3E;on the said Amos Steeles Land&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Despite the presence of &#x27;same name&#x27;, I do not know if these lands are&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x27;the same&#x27; (or part of the original). One of the questions I would like&#x3C;BR&#x3E;to try to answer. LOL Richard, I have many, many land records of the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;above types. Just thought these 3 were somewhat representative, not&#x3C;BR&#x3E;chosen for any purpose other than examples for this discussion about the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;using deed plotting software.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Linda Gardner&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Acton, MA&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; -------- Original Message --------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Subject: Re: [APG] deed plotting programs--3rd try&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; From: &#x22;Richard A. <title>[APG] Illegal immigrants - Chinese Exclusion</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/APG/2009-01/1231264437</link>
<description>The 1882 Act suspended immigration of Chinese laborers but permitted the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Chinese who were already in the U.S. by 1880 to stay here. If they wished to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;travel abroad and return they were required to file certain paper work.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;There was an exempt status for teachers, students, merchants, and travelers.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The 1892 Act was more limiting. Chinese were required to register and obtain&#x3C;BR&#x3E;a certificate of identity or residence as proof of their right to be in the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;U.S. They could be imprisoned or deported if they did not have the proper&#x3C;BR&#x3E;paper work or witnesses.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Trish Nicola&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Patricia &#x22;Trish&#x22; Hackett Nicola, CG&#x3C;BR&#x3E;www.familytraces.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Seattle, WA&#x3C;BR&#x3E;CG and Certified Genealogist are Service Marks of the Board for&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Certification of Genealogists used under license after periodic evaluations&#x3C;BR&#x3E;by the Board. http://www.BCGcertification.org/&#x3C;BR&#x3E;-----Original Message-----&#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: bcg-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bcg-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Of myravg@wamail.net&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2008 7:01 AM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: Gladys Friedman Paulin&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Cc: apg@rootsweb.com; bcg@rootsweb.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: Re: [BCG] Illegal Ancestors&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In response to:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; There was no concept of illegal entry until the naturalization act of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;June 1906 (effective in September 1906). &#x3C;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Technically, there was.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;There was the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Also there was the Slave Trading Act (1807/1808) designed to prevent&#x3C;BR&#x3E;importation of slaves, particularly from Africa.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://ocp.hul.harvard.edu/immigration/themes-exclusion.html&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The 1790 Naturalization Act of the U.S. limited citizenship to free white&#x3C;BR&#x3E;persons. <description>Susan, in cases such as you describe I would expect that the lots are all &#x3C;BR&#x3E;rectangular and I would further expect to find a plat for the entire town &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and perhaps a method for matching the various owners&#x27; lots to the town plat.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Richard P.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;----- Original Message ----- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: &#x22;SUSAN WELLINGTON&#x22; &#x3C;SUSANWELLINGTON@msn.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: &#x3C;apg@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sent: Monday, January 05, 2009 6:15 PM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: Re: [APG] deed plotting programs--3rd try&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; All the deeds I have found for some ancestors in Durham Greene Co NY &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; 1826-1836 mention direction and relationship to adjoining neighbors and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; other family members. <description>Richard-&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Well, I know I&#x27;m STILL looking for the location of &#x22;Spring Branch&#x22; of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Major&#x27;s Run (a branch of Salem Creek) mentioned not only in a Salem County, NJ &#x3C;BR&#x3E;deed--but also in an 1821 NJ Supreme Court encroachment case brought against one &#x3C;BR&#x3E;of my ancestors. &#x3C;g&#x3E; Other boundaries mentioned were an old Oak Tree and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;neighbor&#x27;s property. I suspect Spring Branch dried up many years ago and the oak &#x3C;BR&#x3E;tree is no longer even a stump.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;One of my favorites was a Burlington County, NJ deed that listed &#x22;The Green &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Tree&#x22; as a boundary--thought I&#x27;d not be able to locate this one until I &#x3C;BR&#x3E;learned &#x22;The Green Tree&#x22; was a tavern.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Joan&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;In a message dated 1/5/2009 5:27:27 P.M.
