<description>Rachel you are very welcome though I mostly grope around until I find&#x3C;BR&#x3E;something, much like a (1) blind man, (2) dog with a bone, or (3) democrat.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I share the hunt in that my maternal grandfather, John Golladay, a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;railroadman from the Stuttgart area of AR went to work one day and never&#x3C;BR&#x3E;returned. Family lore (which I have reason to doubt) has him being struck&#x3C;BR&#x3E;mortally by a pool cue while watching a fight in a pool room. I joined this&#x3C;BR&#x3E;list to mostly observe and see if I could pick up a clue. He &#x22;got lost&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;somewhere between 1908-10. AR's unfortunate lack of reliable death records&#x3C;BR&#x3E;precludes just looking for when and where, exactly, he died.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;For all I know he took off for Calfornia with a cute blonde.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;-----Original Message-----&#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: ar-railroads-bounces@rootsweb.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;[mailto:ar-railroads-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Rachel Dobson&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2008 12:06 PM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: ar-railroads@rootsweb.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: Re: [AR-RAILROADS] AR-RAILROADS Digest, Vol 2, Issue 1&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Ron,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks so much for the to-do list! Daniel Henry&#x3C;BR&#x3E;King, born 1857, possibly in Missouri, moved to Tillar, Drew Co.,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Arkansas and married Sarah Rawls Duncan in 1881. He was killed in a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;railroad accident about 1900.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I've read all the MOPAC related messages, and searched several&#x3C;BR&#x3E;websites, and it looks like there are no records before about 1910 (as&#x3C;BR&#x3E;early as NARA railroad records go?).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If anyone has any search suggestions, I'd love to hear them. The one&#x3C;BR&#x3E;thing I haven't done is searched local newspapers for a notice of a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;train accident or his obituary.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Rachel Dobson&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;-------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;AR-RAILROADS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;quotes in the subject and the body of the message&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[AR-RAILROADS] Boiler Explosion with at least one death</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/AR-RAILROADS/2007-11/1195424435</link>
<description>Does anyone on this list know of a source to prove a boiler explosion that&#x3C;BR&#x3E;occurred between 1906 and 1915? At least one fatality, that of Henry Leslie&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Hickman, fireman or engineer, I believe it was Rock Island Line, out of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Little Rock, Arkansas. I'm having a tough time finding the info. He was&#x3C;BR&#x3E;married to (Anna) Bell CARNES, widow of W.C. ANDERSON, Sr. Thanks. A. Boyer&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Sam,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I am no railroad expert, but I do have an interest. My great granfather was a fireman on the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad. He was killed in his early 20's in a collision involving 2 trains in Little Rock about 1902.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I havn't traced the cities you mention, but I'm wondering if you know your great grandfather travelled by train? It appears that the Little Rock &#x26; Memphis Railroad was the first railroad in Arkansas, &#x22;a company which held the distinction of operating over the first railroad trackage in Arkansas.&#x22; That information comes from this site: http://www.trainweb.org/choctawterminal/history.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The &#x22;. . . Little Rock and Memphis Railroad. . . had been organized by a special Act of the Arkansas Assembly on January 11, 1853. . .&#x22; &#x22;That line had been surveyed in 1854 and four years later the line had been completed from Memphis to Madison, Arkansas, 45 miles west. The next 40 miles to DeVall's Bluff, including a big bridge across the White River, was not completed until 1871. Later that year, through rail service was put into operation between Memphis and Little Rock.&#x22; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://faculty.simpson.edu/RITS/www/histories/RIHistory.html&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x22;So, in 1898, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf bought the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad and then completed the Little Rock-Indian Territory boundary line trackage 151 miles long, including a bridge across the Arkansas River.&#x22; (See link in last paragraph.) I believe this part of the line went to western Oklahoma through Oklahoma City and made connections to Texas, but not during the time frame you are looking for.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Hope this will help you. There may have been other railroads I'm not aware of, but it seems like Little Rock would have been the central hub for them.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;If you don't have evidence he travelled by train, another possibility would be to look at waterways (riverboats) as an alternative to horse or covered wagon.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Len Doughty&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;----- Original Message ----&#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: &#x22;ar-railroads-request@rootsweb.com&#x22; &#x3C;ar-railroads-request@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: ar-railroads@rootsweb.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2007 2:00:20 AM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: AR-RAILROADS Digest, Vol 1, Issue 1&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Today's Topics:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E; 1.
