<title>[AUS-QLD-IPSWICH] Bellavista Gardens Estate_ Iffley_Abbotsford, Newtown</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/AUS-QLD-IPSWICH/2008-12/1230034147</link>
<description>Hi &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Wondering if anyone has any info on Bellavista Gardens Estate (simewhere in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the Newtown area, I believe).  The earliest mention I have of it is on a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;marriage certificate from 1858.  It also appears on GEE certificates I have&#x3C;BR&#x3E;from 1858 and 1859.  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Also Abbotsford?  I think it may have been a house in the Blackstone&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Rd/Booval area?  My gggrandmother, Rhoda ROBINSON, was living there in 1861.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Also anything about Iffley?  A map in the Newtown/Silkstone S School&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Centenary booklet has &#x27;J R Atkinson (Iffley)&#x27; marked on it in an area near&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Walsh St (just west of the Newtown Estate, I believe).  My ggrandfather was&#x3C;BR&#x3E;born at Iffley, Ipswich in 1865 according to his birth certificate.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Happy Christmas&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Judy&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Dear Betty,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I left Ipwich over 42 years ago when still in my teens.  Can&#x27;t say that I do &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and I know nothing of the Volunteer Band.  Sorry to disappoint you.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My only assistance for you is that I keep in touch with the Ipswich &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Genealogical Society and find them quite a good group. They publish a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;magazine in which you could advertise.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I was in Ipswich in September and met the librarian at Ipswich Library who &#x3C;BR&#x3E;is co-ordinating &#x22;Picture Ipswich&#x22; and was in the library as they were &#x3C;BR&#x3E;looking through some of the early photos of WF Whitehead, long-term Ipswich &#x3C;BR&#x3E;photographer, which had been donated to the library.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Hopefully you&#x27;ll locate some photos through your enquiries.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;As I&#x27;m not sure where you live the following might be of assistance - the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;local paper is &#x22;The Queensland Times, which has been published for well over &#x3C;BR&#x3E;10o years.  A local &#x22;free-bee&#x22; paper is &#x22;The Advertier&#x22; (from memory).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Happy hunting, Noela.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;----- Original Message ----- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;From: &#x22;Betty Candy&#x22; &#x3C;bjcandy@bigpond.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;To: &#x3C;aus-qld-ipswich@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 2:55 PM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-IPSWICH] Volunteer Band &#x26; Cramer or Kramer&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Dear Noela&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Did you know any members of the HALLS family in Ipswich?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Regards&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Betty Candy&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; ----- Original Message ----- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; From: &#x22;Noela Wallace&#x22; &#x3C;wallacedn@optusnet.com.au&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; To: &#x3C;aus-qld-ipswich@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 11:26 AM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Subject: Re: [AUS-QLD-IPSWICH] Volunteer Band &#x26; Cramer or Kramer&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Greetings Val,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; A few places to request information on Ipswich.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Ipswich Genealogical Society, on internet or PO Box 323 Ipswich.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Ipswich Historical Society&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Ipswich Library which has a current project called &#x22;Picture Ipswich&#x22; and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; has&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; just received a quantity of glass negative from F A Whitehead, the local&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; photographer for decades.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; I was born and educated in Ipswich but now live in Sydney so, good luck&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; with&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; your research.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; ----- Original Message ----- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; From: &#x22;Val Messer&#x22; &#x3C;valmess@b130.aone.net.au&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; To: &#x3C;AUS-QLD-IPSWICH@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Sent: Friday, November 28, 2008 9:35 AM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Subject: [AUS-QLD-IPSWICH] Volunteer Band &#x26; Cramer or Kramer&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Hello Ipswich Listers&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; I am hoping that someone on the list may be able to offer some help,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; advice&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; etc.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; My great-grandfather, Ferdinand (aka Frederick) Cramer, a Prussian by&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; birth,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; lived in Ipswich from mid 1864 until at least July 1879, when his&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; youngest&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; child was born.  All but the first of his 9 children were born in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Ipswich&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; and two, who died in infancy, are buried there.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; A news item in the Brisbane Courier, 26 Oct 1864, refers to the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; formation&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the Ipswich Volunteer Band, with Mr Cramer the bandmaster.  Ferdinand&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Cramer&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; played the clarionet.  I have found many news items in the Courier re &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Volunteer Band and its performances under Mr Cramer.  A news item early&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; 1873 refers to a &#x27;complimentary dinner given to Mr Ferdinand Cramer,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; leader&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; of the Volunteer Band.&#x27;  At the dinner he was presented with a gold &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; ring,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; suitably inscribed, as a token of the respect in which he was held.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; I am wondering whether there would be any photographs in Ipswich showing&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Band between 1864 and 1879/80.  Photographs on my grandmother&#x27;s side of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; family are almost non-existent and I would love to be able to find one &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Ferdinand.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Could anyone tell me if there is an Historical Society or any similar&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; organisation in Ipswich where I may be able to find a photo of that &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; early&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Band? All but the first of his 9 children were born in Ipswich&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; and two, who died in infancy, are buried there.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; A news item in the Brisbane Courier, 26 Oct 1864, refers to the formation&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the Ipswich Volunteer Band, with Mr Cramer the bandmaster.  Ferdinand&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Cramer&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; played the clarionet.  I have found many news items in the Courier re the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Volunteer Band and its performances under Mr Cramer.  A news item early &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; 1873 refers to a &#x27;complimentary dinner given to Mr Ferdinand Cramer,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; leader&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; of the Volunteer Band.&#x27;  At the dinner he was presented with a gold ring,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; suitably inscribed, as a token of the respect in which he was held.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; I am wondering whether there would be any photographs in Ipswich showing&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Band between 1864 and 1879/80.  Photographs on my grandmother&#x27;s side of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; family are almost non-existent and I would love to be able to find one of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Ferdinand.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Could anyone tell me if there is an Historical Society or any similar&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; organisation in Ipswich where I may be able to find a photo of that early&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Band?  Any suggestions would be most welcome.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Regards&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Val Messer (Bundaberg).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; Toowoomba Dead Persons Society&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E;                             www.audps.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; -------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; AUS-QLD-IPSWICH-request@rootsweb.com with the word &#x27;unsubscribe&#x27; without&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3E; the quotes in the subject and the body of the message&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Toowoomba Dead Persons Society&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;                             www.audps.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; -------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; AUS-QLD-IPSWICH-request@rootsweb.com with the word &#x27;unsubscribe&#x27; without &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; the quotes in the subject and the body of the message&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;No virus found in this incoming message.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Version: 8.0.176 / Virus Database: 270.9.11/1816 - Release Date: 11/27/2008 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;7:53 PM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
