I grew up in Adelaide with stories of the remarkable policewoman Kate Cocks and what she did to help girls and their babies. Later this was in conjunction with the Methodist (now Uniting Church). I am not sure how far back you are talking but the 2 main Adelaide orphanages I can remember as a child was one called the Sisters of St Joseph - Largs Bay orphanage ( established 1903 ) was a huge old dingy place.I used to go their with the family for fundraiser's in the 1960's.I think one of my Aunty's used to sponsor one of the children.I know the family used to take baked goods to the place,can't remember if they were to be sold or consumed by the children though.It was a long long time ago !. There must have been others but these are the only 2 that I knew of as a child - I lived a fairly insularly life,back then as kids you only went anywhere that your parents or family went. The Orphanage at Brooklyn Park was run by the Salesian Brothers of Don Bosco ( Catholic Church ) & it was an orphanage for boys that were a bit older.From memory I think the eldest that we took on the camp may have been around 14 & the younger ones around 10.. The Sister of the Resurrection Nuns ( that taught me in Grade 7 ) at Albert Park school.lived in the next suburb of Royal Park,Our Schools & Parishes combined when I was in Grade 7.( I had previously been taught by the Sisters of Mercy at the same school ) The Nuns lived at George St,Royal Park at St Stanislaus Convent & they ran a small orphanage.Mum was close friends with a number of the Nuns & also used to sponsor a family of 3 children who's family lived in Sunshine ,a suburb of Melbourne.I think the Mother had health problems so gave them up to the Nuns. The Nuns still live there but the orphanage closed down years ago.
