<title>[AUS-SMITH-LOST] Charles Sylvester SMITH, 1831-1884, Sydney</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/AUS-SMITH-LOST/2008-07/1215525581</link>
<description>    That&#x27;s scary suggesting name changes too!!    My Charles didn&#x27;t go missing but he seems to have miraculously appeared as a master mariner,  ship owner &#x26; merchant in Sydney in the 1850s.    No,  he isn&#x27;t on the mariner&#x27;s rego list.    He was part owner of the barque Ashburton &#x26; other ships apparently &#x26; did sail her for many years.    He married Eliza Ann ROBERTSON in Sydney in 1870 &#x26; they lived on Ashburton with her having her first 2 sons at sea on her.    They had 6 sons:  Charles Pearce Robertson b6Jul1871, d10Jun1892,    Alan Richard Asdhburton b13Jan1873, d25Mar1892,     Horace Owen Leslie b6Dec1874, d5Mar1875,    George James Bardo b8Oct1876, d9Oct1932,    David Owen Leslie b26Apr1878, d11May1957,    Joseph William b17Jun1880, d19Mar1961 Qld.     Charles died 22Apr1884, Darling st Balmain.    Somewhere around 1896 Eliza married Edwin Howard but we haven&#x27;t found her death as yet.    All the papers &#x26; certs we have obtained for Charles say he was from Sydney &#x26; was born!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;  in Sydney but have unknown for parent&#x27;s names.    My Auntie said there was a baby born to convict parents on board ship in Sydney Harbour &#x3C;Cove&#x3E; which would&#x27;ve been his parents or granparents were convicts.    He/his mum could&#x27;ve started out in the female factory or the orphanage.    There is a family Bible which confirms names &#x26; dates but it starts with Charles &#x26; Eliza&#x27;s marriage.    Someone suggested Charles had a brother Richard but there is no evidence of that yet.    Any suggestions very welcome.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;    &#x3C;BR&#x3E;                                              Cheers.        Anne from Cairns, Aus.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>The burial details at the cemetery (even undertakers records) ideally should&#x3C;BR&#x3E;list the name of the person who organised the burial and their address.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In my JONES line we have a series of children being baptised twice in two&#x3C;BR&#x3E;different parishes although the same religion however, there were name&#x3C;BR&#x3E;changes!!!! Perhaps it is time to list again my missing&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Smiths.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Anne McMahon married John Smith in Bendigo in 1860. John died in 1870 and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Anne&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; in Bendigo in 1906. No problems there, both are buried in the Bendigo&#x3C;BR&#x3E;cemetery.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Two children Thomas and James are also buried in Bendigo. However their&#x3C;BR&#x3E;two&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; older children William, born 1862 and Jonathon born 1866 are complete&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; mysteries.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; On their mother&#x27;s death certificate in 1906 the children are listed as&#x3C;BR&#x3E;William&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; (unknown), Thomas (dead) Jonathon (unknown) and James (dead)which seems to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; point to whoever filled out the certificate knowing that William and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Jonathon&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; were alive somewhere. But where??&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; BDMs list a Jonathon Smith dying in Echuca in 1940 aged 74, therefore born&#x3C;BR&#x3E;in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; 1866, but parents are listed as unknown. There are no entries for any&#x3C;BR&#x3E;children&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; of Anne and John except the two children buried in Bendigo with them.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;However&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; there are lots and lots and lots of William and John Smiths with unknown&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; parents.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; I think my only hope is for someone owning William or Jonathon and come&#x3C;BR&#x3E;looking&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; for their parents. All for the best.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;kind regards Jill&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;--- On Mon, 7/7/08, Sandra &#x3C;fedelmar@westnet.com.au&#x3E; wrote:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; From: Sandra &#x3C;fedelmar@westnet.com.au&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Subject: Re: [AUS-SMITH-LOST] John Smith b.1832 FOUND&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; To: aus-smith-lost@rootsweb.com&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Received: Monday, 7 July, 2008, 9:02 PM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Well done!!!!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; It is inspiring when people find their SMITH&#x27;s ...&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Having said that ... if any one has a SMITH that was killed&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; in action in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; France at the battle of Fromelles 20th &#x26; 19th July 1916&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; please let me know&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; :)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Bright Blessings&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Sandra&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; ----- Original Message ----- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; From: &#x3C;klaush@iprimus.com.au&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; To: &#x3C;wilsonjill2@yahoo.com.au&#x3E;;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;aus-smith-lost@rootsweb.com&#x3E;;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;aus-smith-lost@rootsweb.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Sent: Monday, July 07, 2008 6:57 PM&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Subject: Re: [AUS-SMITH-LOST] John Smith b.1832 FOUND&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3E; Hi Jill, thanks for your reply.
