Thanks David,

That tells me that Henry William PONT, almost certainly, emigrated from
England, in 1897. Because he and his family lived in East Sussex, on the
South Coast of England, the most likely port would have been Southampton,
about 90 miles west along the coast, along a narrow and winding road.

To think I put off asking the question for a long time because I didn't
think anyone would know anything, it being so long ago!

I hope no one minds but I'd like to give my website address. There are no
adverts on it nor do I get paid for the number of people who visit it but
I'd welcome some feedback and, in a section on WW1 there is mention of some
young brothers from the village (NOAKES family) who emigrated to Bardoc
(Alice PONT was their aunt).

If I may ask another quick question, in the Western Australian Directory of
1913 and 1914, under Bardoc, there is mention of a "Noakes, Gitton, and
Noia, mine owners", and in the 1915 edition, appears a "Noakes Thomas G,".

This must be Thomas George NOAKES, who was killed at Gallipoli, on 1st
August 1915. I just wondered if anyone could expand on who the "Noakes,
Gitton, and Nioa, mine owners", were, why they are down as mine owners,
when, as far as I understand it, mining was what Bardoc and Kalgoorlie was,
mainly, all about, at that time.

Oh and here's my web address www.jwnewport.co.uk Hope no one minds!

Thanks David and thanks to all - and if it's not too late, Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year.

Kindest regards - sorry about the long email!

John

-----Original Message-----
From: aus-wa-kalgoorlie-region-bounces@rootsweb.com
[mailto:aus-wa-kalgoorlie-region-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Suzanne
Hobby
Sent: 25 December 2008 02:34
To: aus-wa-kalgoorlie-region@rootsweb.com
Subject: Re: [AUS-WA-KALGOORLIE-REGION] Immigration from England 1896-1920

Hi,
The genealogy site www.findmypast.com lists passengers leaving the UK from
1890 onwards.
>From 1890 until 1897 they have the following male passengers with surname
'Pont': -

Departure Destination
Last Name	First Name	Year of Birth	Gender	Year	Port
Country	Port
PONT	Chas 1870	M	1890	Liverpool	USA	Boston
PONT	E Unknown	M	1890	Liverpool	Canada	Halifax
PONT	E C	Unknown	M	1893	Liverpool	USA	New York
PONT	Geo Unknown	M	1890	Liverpool	Canada	Halifax
PONT	Jno 1862	M	1895	London	New Zealand	Wellington
PONT	John 1872	M	1890	Liverpool	USA	Boston
PONT	M Unknown	M	1892	Liverpool	Indonesia
Jakarta (Batavia)

Regards
David Hobby

John Newport's request struck a chord.

My wife's great uncle, William Smith, married the widow (Mary Dudley, nee
Steadman) of the late licencee of the Bardoc Hotel (Lionel Dudley) in
January 1900. (Lionel died in 1896)

When following up Colleen's family history I made contact with a descendant
of William and Mary who provided me with a copy of a memoir written by his
grandmother, Kathleen Mary (only child of William and Mary), which I have
copied into MS Word. Also provided was a copy of a short history of Bardoc
written by Doug Darroch in 1981. This latter I am copying into Word (the
copy is too poor to be scanned) and will send both to John when that task is
finished to help him background his ancestor's time in that area.

However, this preamble really leads on to a desire on my part to make
contact with descendants of Mary Steadman's first marriage as I would like
to fill some gaps in the narrative I have at present. Lionel and Mary had
four children - Lionel Joseph, Frederick James, Adelaide Jessie and Eileen
Mary - born or rather, registered, in 1883, 1885, 1887 and 1890
respectively.

If anyone on this list has any knowledge of how I might make contact with
one or more of the Dudley descendants I would be most grateful for that
information.

the older of the tworobbos

[AUS-WA-KALGOORLIE-REGION] Immigration from England 1896-1920

I'm trying to find exactly when two people emigrated, from England, to
Australia. One was Henry William PONT, who must have emigrated in or before
1897 when he took over the ownership of the Miner's Arms Hotel, in Bardoc
(according to the Western Australia Directory.

And the second was an Alice PONT who may have emigrated with him or gone
later. She was there by 1914, because her name and address was given as the
next-of-kin by three young brothers who joined the army at that time.

I believe that Henry was the brother of Alice's husband, James, who may have
died in Australia as I can't find his death recorded in England. They owned
the Hotel, in Bardoc, until 1919, when their name disappears off the Western
Australia Directory list and the hotel is shown with a new owner.

I'm sorry it's vague but that's all the facts I have!

My question is, where is the best place to search for their immigration
records (hopefully, on the Internet!). I've searched a few sites but not
found any information so I may be searching the wrong ones.

Thanks in advance!

John

Hello Graeme,

I thought I'd let you know the results from the websites you gave me. Well,
the Western Australia Directory for 1910, under the town of Bardoc, gives
the following

Pont Henry W. , Miner's Arms Hotel,

So, the Pont family did own or, at least run, the hotel. I don't know the
relationship between Henry and Alice as Alice was married to a James Pont in
1891. Henry could be a son or James' brother

There's a lot more research to do - such as finding when she, Alice,
actually did emigrate to Australia. I've always assumed that it was at the
same time as her nephews but it might not be right.

At least I'm off again, on the trail! After
> operating
> bullock teams and farming in the Flinders Ranges, SA, the family came to
> the
> Eastern Goldfields of WA around 1896. Some later moved to Tarwonga and
> Pingelly to farm, others remained in the Goldfields. Some of the families
> into which the Halls married are:
> Cowin, Preston, McLoughlin, Armstrong, Doig, Major, Nicholls, Richards,
> Golding, Jenkins, Basley, Northey, Elkington, Graham, Rose, House, Bath,
> Medlen, Piesse, Williams and Worthington.
>
> My COWIN family originated on the Isle of Man and, after arriving in South
> Australia, Thomas Cowin married Martha Blackwell who came from Cornwall.
>
> After farming at Laura and the Flinders Ranges, Thomas Arthur
>
> Cowin arrived at the Eastern Goldfields around 1896 where he later married
> Maud Hall. His brother, Charlie Cowin, also came to WA where he married
> Bessie Hall, first cousin to Maud Hall. Some of the families into which
> the
> Cowins married are:
> Hall, Richards, Groth, Noske, Phillis, Parsons, Piesse, Thomas, Ford,
> Berry,
> Nicholls and Jackson.
>
> I already have much information on these people and would be happy to
> share
> it with interested family researchers. Despite this, I have many gaps and
> am
> looking for more information on the Halls and Cowins. I hope someone can
> help.
>
> Ross Thomas of Canberra
>
>
> -------------------------------
> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to
> AUS-WA-KALGOORLIE-REGION-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe'
> without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
>
