Because he and his family lived in East Sussex, on the South Coast of England, the most likely port would have been Southampton, about 90 miles west along the coast, along a narrow and winding road. To think I put off asking the question for a long time because I didn't think anyone would know anything, it being so long ago! I hope no one minds but I'd like to give my website address. There are no adverts on it nor do I get paid for the number of people who visit it but I'd welcome some feedback and, in a section on WW1 there is mention of some young brothers from the village (NOAKES family) who emigrated to Bardoc (Alice PONT was their aunt). If I may ask another quick question, in the Western Australian Directory of 1913 and 1914, under Bardoc, there is mention of a "Noakes, Gitton, and Noia, mine owners", and in the 1915 edition, appears a "Noakes Thomas G,". This must be Thomas George NOAKES, who was killed at Gallipoli, on 1st August 1915. I just wondered if anyone could expand on who the "Noakes, Gitton, and Nioa, mine owners", were, why they are down as mine owners, when, as far as I understand it, mining was what Bardoc and Kalgoorlie was, mainly, all about, at that time. My wife's great uncle, William Smith, married the widow (Mary Dudley, nee Steadman) of the late licencee of the Bardoc Hotel (Lionel Dudley) in January 1900. (Lionel died in 1896) When following up Colleen's family history I made contact with a descendant of William and Mary who provided me with a copy of a memoir written by his grandmother, Kathleen Mary (only child of William and Mary), which I have copied into MS Word. Also provided was a copy of a short history of Bardoc written by Doug Darroch in 1981. This latter I am copying into Word (the copy is too poor to be scanned) and will send both to John when that task is finished to help him background his ancestor's time in that area. However, this preamble really leads on to a desire on my part to make contact with descendants of Mary Steadman's first marriage as I would like to fill some gaps in the narrative I have at present. Lionel and Mary had four children - Lionel Joseph, Frederick James, Adelaide Jessie and Eileen Mary - born or rather, registered, in 1883, 1885, 1887 and 1890 respectively. Well, the Western Australia Directory for 1910, under the town of Bardoc, gives the following Pont Henry W. , Miner's Arms Hotel, So, the Pont family did own or, at least run, the hotel. I don't know the relationship between Henry and Alice as Alice was married to a James Pont in 1891. Henry could be a son or James' brother There's a lot more research to do - such as finding when she, Alice, actually did emigrate to Australia. I've always assumed that it was at the same time as her nephews but it might not be right. At least I'm off again, on the trail!
