<title>[BAGGATE] BAGGATE: Joseph Baggate</title>

<description>Joseph Baggate(Baygat/Bygait as in early records) arrived in Ayr in 1653 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with the regiment of Colonel Thomas Cooper, part of the Cromwellian &#x3C;BR&#x3E;occupation army in Scotland.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In a tax roll ot the inhabitants or Ayr compiled in 1659 lists Lieutenant &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Bygait and his spouse Janet Mason.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The regiment in the garrison in Ayr was disbanded in 1660 and most of it's &#x3C;BR&#x3E;personnel returned to England.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;However Lieutenant Joseph Baggat stayed on in Ayr and became a properous &#x3C;BR&#x3E;merchant.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Later he married Marion Miller and a son William Baygat was christened in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;29/2/1680 in Ayr.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Joseph Baggate then married Susannah Kennedy, daughter of John Kennedy.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;They had four children.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Joseph christened 1684&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sarah christened 1686&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Susannah christened 1688&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Elizabeth christened 1690&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Joseph died in Ayr.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Peter McCrae &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
