I believe the William J Bailes, aged 11, may be the son of my Great Grandmother Mary Selwood's first marriage to William Bailes. Her husband was deceased by this point and I am curious, if this her son, why he is living with his Grandmother at this time. I can't find Mary (married to my Great Grandfather John Collins) in the 1901 Census at all! The details of the household are as follows: Bailes: Mary A Head Widow 64 Henry Son Single 24 worked on the railway Albert Son Single 22 Compositor Print Sarah Daughter 25 Dressmaker William J Grandson 11 Boarders (not really useful here, but entertaining!): John Willis Single 27 Bus driver George Ostrich Single 28 Stableman Groom George Johnson Married 54 Detective Guild(!!!) The address appears to be 25 Melton Street, which is Pancras I believe. Thanks! He lived at 1 Euston Mews. His father was a Carriage Painter and also called William, he was alive at the time of the marriage. One of the witnesses to the marriage was a Charles Bailes. >From the 1891 Census: William and Mary lived at Christchurch Road, Streatham. He is listed as a Stableman/Groom. They had two children, William, who is listed as 1 year old and Albert, who is listed as 5 months old. >From Mary Jane's second marriage in 1895: Mary is entered as a Widow, which means her husband William died between 1891 and 1895. This of course may mean there are people alive today who are descended from my Great Grandmother and William! However I don't know yet if they were still alive when she married my Great Grandfather John, as I have not been able to find their household on the 1901 Census. If so they may have been re-named Collins or kept the name Bailes. If any more comes up I'll let you know! Blame it on a good dose of influenza.. I'm so sorry that I led you astray. Here are the corrections. The original William and Sarah Bailes had 10 children born between 1803 and 1821 Henry Sarah Frances Emily Mary Ann Elizabeth Ann Jane William John Anthony James Barry Jane (no 2) So I suppose any of the males could have been the progenitor of your William. (I have the birth and baptismal dates for them all should you need them.) All the children were christened in the Church of St Anne, Soho, Westminster - certainly not born in it!! The last correction is: -the original Sarah and Henry Bailes were married on 11th October 1801 not 1811.
