Ok Dave,
I don't know what all that scam alert business is about...

Unfortunately, I think many people have become extremely sensitive and
react to email from Africa, probably because of all the "Nigerian"
scams that have been going on for so many years; especially since the
advent of computer email. Thanks for listing your contact info and
other verifying information to help alleviate those fears and
concerns. Don't worry about it. You have just as much right to post as
anyone else.

In answer to your question about combining the three mail lists
(BAIRD, BARD, & BEARD) I think it is safe to say that they are for the
most part quite distinct here in the US since the advent of literacy,
but almost everyone has some documented or anecdotal information that
tends to show various kinds of intertwining (including DNA
connections) between the three surnames. The more literal occurrences
often took place in the early frontier days and/or in the Old World.
And most of the DNA connections and common ancestors probably also
occurred in the Old World. But even today, you can find evidence of
name changes and name misspellings that cross over from one of these
surnames to another. Sometimes even official documents and signatures
show the various spelling anomalies for the same person. My family too
has several such references and stories.

Good luck with your Baird and other surname genealogy research.

If there is any way I can be of service now or in the future, be sure
to let me know.

Best regards,
Curtis Bard
--------------

On Oct 27, 2008, at 4:17 AM, Dave Mitchell wrote:

> Hello Curtis
>
> Sorry to have caused a scam upset on your various lists. That was
> the last thing I intended, and my apologies to all who may have felt
> troubled.
>
> All I have is two Baird wills that I downloaded last Saturday from
> the National Archives, in London, at £3,50 a copy, which I am happy
> to share (freely from my side -- subject obviously to copyright and
> acknowledgement to London). I don't have the time to focus on their
> translation or transcription, as I'm not a Baird family researcher.
> These wills are listed in their catalogue at documentsonline.
>
> It is unusual to find an American will posted in London, but a gem
> when you do find this. (I recently found two Irish Mitchell wills
> in London, dd. 1691 and 1722 -- they belong to a family of
> Philadelphia merchants and Quakers, one having been a friend of
> William Penn. Early Irish wills are as scarce as hen's teeth.)
>
> If anyone would like to check my bona fides, please would they go to
> any of the following:
>
> -- Ulster Historical Foundation, member no. 202 (life member)
>
> -- CFA Institute, Charlottesville, Virginia (under name Adv.
> Dave Mitchell, CFA)
>
> -- South African Institute of Chartered Accountants -- SAICA
>
> Or Google under "Mitchell" and "Killymallaght", my home townland-of-
> origin in county Londonderry, Ireland.
>
> My home address is: 38 Riverton Road, Rondebosch 7700, [Cape Town],
> South Africa -- telephone listed under "David J.
Thanks, Jim. (I will skip the reasons, > rather than educate scammers so they can improve their technique.) A > quick whois check on the machine used to originate the e-mail simply > showed that South Africa does not have a whois server that allows > easy checking of identies of machines registered on the Internet.> > By going direct to a data base in South Africa, I found there is > indeed a registration for the sending machine (an Internet > requirement), but the addresses for all entities listed for its > owners are post office boxes. Not a single street address that could > be visited anywhere.> > Then, a quick Google for both scam and the server name pixie.co.za> in the same document turned up over 8,000 hits,> > "Results 1 - 10 of about 8,360 for +scam +pixie.co.za. (0.20 seconds)"> > It appears pixie.co.za has a significant history of use by scam artists.> > 1. First, better not to respond.> 2. If you must respond, get a gmail or hotmail or other disposable> mail address and use that in all communication.> 3. Provide no identifying data on yourself that could possibly be > used in identity theft crimes: full name, address, phone/fax > numbers, normal e-mail address, social security number, bank account > or credit card numbers, maiden name of mother, names of schools > attended, employer, etc.> 4. Provide no money whatsoever to "defray incidental expenses" of > any kind, postage, notary public fees, legal fees, etc.> 5. I have never heard of the UK National Archives (if such an entity> exists) selling historical documents to any private individuals. > Obtain details and verify the origin of the document with the British > Government if you really think you have a "genuine find."> > I am not a forensic investigator, and there is a chance I could be> wrong about this being a scam operation. (Maybe a 1 in a million> chance, in my estimation, but a chance.)
It appears we have a working scam directed against the Beard, Baird,
and Bard mailing lists, and perhaps others.

Phrasing of the message struck me as odd.
