<title>[Balch] Researching BALK?</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BALCH/2008-07/1216915555</link>
<description>Hello, Listers,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;   Is anyone out there researching the BALK family?&#x3C;BR&#x3E; My grandmother's second marriage was to Herbert Albert BALK (1889-1971) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Herb never had children.  I have photos, including one of Herb as a young man with his parents and others.  He died in Lake Worth, Florida.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;   Jeanne Johnson&#x3C;BR&#x3E;   Massachusetts&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;      &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[Balch] Balch lines tested in the Balch DNA Project</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BALCH/2007-11/1195355272</link>
<description>The following Balch lines either have been tested or are in the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;process of being tested as part of the DNA project:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1. A Balch line from Lithuania that orginally went by the name&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Balchowsky. They came to the U.S. in the mid-to-late 1800s and settled&#x3C;BR&#x3E;in the Chicago area.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;2. A Balch line that had settled in Sumner Co., TN by 1840. There is&#x3C;BR&#x3E;speculation that it is a branch of the Maryland Balch line. We should&#x3C;BR&#x3E;find out shortly. You can read more about this line here:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.baulch.us:80/John-SophiaBaulchSource.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;3. The Maryland Balch line represented by a descendant of Dr. Hezekiah&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Balch b. 1741 in Maryland. (Results pending)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The testing company being used for the project is currently offering&#x3C;BR&#x3E;limited discounts on testing through the end of the year. Please&#x3C;BR&#x3E;contact me for more information.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Also, I desperately need a Balch DNA donor from my line so we can&#x3C;BR&#x3E;confirm or disprove a suspected connection to the Maryland Balch line.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; I descend from John Balch and Nancy Basham who married in Warren Co.,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;KY in 1806.   They had moved to Giles Co., TN by 1820.     Any help in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;finding a donor would be much appreciated.  I know some of their&#x3C;BR&#x3E;descendants were also in Lawrence Co., TN and Lauderdale Co., AL.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Jane Gilbert&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Balch Y-DNA Project Admin&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.familytreedna.com/public/balch/&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[Balch] VAUGHAN - BALCH Family Photograph</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BALCH/2007-10/1191637269</link>
<description>I've &#x22;rescued&#x22; an old photograph of Mrs. P. M. JAMES which was taken at the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Lewis Studio in Amboy, Illinois.  I believe that the photograph was taken in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;the 1880's with Mrs. JAMES likely in her 30's at the time it was taken.  In&#x3C;BR&#x3E;addition to her name, someone has written &#x22;as a young married woman&#x22; on the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;back of the photograph.  Based on limited research I believe that this is a&#x3C;BR&#x3E;photograph of Charlotte Louise VAUGHAN b. 17 Apr 1858 in Amboy, IL to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;parents Calvin VAUGHAN (b. 28 Jul 1828 in Plattsburg, NY) and Louise Marie&#x3C;BR&#x3E;BALCH (b. 18 Aug 1829).  Charlotte married Peleg Miner JAMES Jr. (b. 14 Jul&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1850 in Exeter, RI) on 25 Dec 1878.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The couple had 6 children including, Harold; Leonard Vaughan; Herbert Miner;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Louise Ann; Edward Allen; and Harriet Lillian JAMES, all born between 1881&#x3C;BR&#x3E;and 1895.  It would appear that all the children were born in Amboy, IL.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Census records provide the following information regarding the family:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1880 census of Amboy, IL:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;P. M. The same is true for all other surname projects.  A man could only participate in the project of his surname.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;There is a test women (and men) can take which analyzes their mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA).  This DNA is passed from mother to child (both boys and girls), but only the females pass it on to their children.  This type of DNA goes straight up your maternal line and therefore has no surname significance.   It also doesn't mutate as readily as Y-DNA does, so if you were to exactly match someone, you'd have no idea whether it was in the past 400 years or past 20,000 years.  As such, it's of limited use for genealogy  purposes, but does tell you about the anthropological roots of your maternal line.   It can, however, in very specific circumstances be used to prove a suspected maternal connection.  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;jane&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

I can see that three Balch people have been tested through the company already, so if you're out there, please feel free to use the &#x22;Join&#x22; option to join the newly created project.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Here's a link to the project: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=T16902&#x26;special=true&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;For those unfamiliar with the concept, Y-DNA is DNA that is passed from father to son and thus it tracks a surname. In theory, every male in a line that shares the same surname (e.g. Balch) should have matching or very similar DNA. There's a greater likelihood that sixth cousins would have more differences than first cousins, but it's all a game of probability.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;As an example what the testing might prove, it's widely believed that the John Balch in Warren Co., KY was the grandson of the John Balch in Mecklenberg Co., NC. If a male descendant the Warren Co. line were to match a known descendant of the Mecklenberg Co. line, we could at least confirm a connection. We wouldn't know exactly when the connection occured, but it would provide a some substantiation to the theory.  And what's really helpful is that sometimes a branch will incur a unique genetic mutation that can help others who are tested tie into a specific branch of the tree.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I just thought I'd give this project a shot and see if there's any interest. If so, please fire away with any questions.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Jane Gilbert&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Descendant of John Balch and Nancy Basham of Warren Co., KY and Giles Co., TN&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
