But I was hoping that maybe your Baumann followed a relative (cousin, older brother, uncle, whatever) to Ohio. Since "hope springs eternal," I was hoping that Isidor would turn out to be that relative :-). I have no idea how or why Isidor ended up in the Cincinnati area. If he was related to your Bauman ancestor, he could have been heading to the same destination where your ancestors eventually settled. But I'm inclined to believe that he stopped at the German settlement in Camp Springs, KY, to pass along news from the Old Country to former Germans, met his future wife, and decided to settle there rather than continue any farther. She (Anna Maria Steffen) had come over with her family a few years before Isidor arrived on the scene, so I don't think they knew one another in Germany. His marriage record does not list his parents. Nor do his naturalization papers. The godparents o!
f their children were all living in the Camp Springs, KY, area, so it's hard to know if they were relatives, or just pioneers in the same German settlement. Oh well, if you run across him, I would appreciate your letting me know. Thanks! I have not begun my research in Frieberg as of yet. I am trying to get as much done in this country first before I embark on that adventure. If I run across the name in my research I will let you know. From their marriage date, it appears they came over before my Baumans (1853-1854 immgration). Have you looked at the Church records personally? Could be some mention of parents. Also, I found the Baptismal records very helpful -- look at who the godparents are of their children -- many times they were relatives.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help -- will keep you posted if I find anything.

Shelly

Important Note:
The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. He was born in 1815 and came from Baden. He came to Kentucky via New Orleans--I would assume via the Ohio River. I've hit a brick wall also and know nothing more about his origin in Germany, nor do I know anything about his family members. It's as if he just dropped out of the sky! He married Anna Maria Steffen in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1844. They were married at Old St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church. I have determined Benjamin and Franz came over from Germany through Havre, France in 1853, followed by their parents and two brothers, John and Anselm in 1854. The patriarch of the family here was Adolph Baumann (b. 1877, d. 1973) (married to Theresa Bollinger) who emigrated to the US through Canada in the late 1800's from Sousfey (sp?) Switzerland. Children of Adolph and Theresa included Erwin, Harry, Walter- all born in the St. Louis, Mo area.
We suspect a name change occurred but are unsure. We have a marriage certificate with a name that is hard to read...it may be Lyman(n)? ...but it is not Baumann.
