Sharon Light finds out the history of Antwerp’s Jews and maps out some of the places to go to find Jewish food specialities. A strange wooden sculpture by the Belgian artist and furniture designer Arne Quinze was unveiled last week in the street outside the Flemish parliament. We sent our photographer down to capture the strange beauty of the structure. In our business section, we investigate a new rage in Antwerp, where young job seekers are meeting cool employers at a disco job fair. We also examine recent measures by the Flemish government to stimulate the economy and a new proposal to fund the construction of wind turbines off the Flemish coast. For something off the beaten track, Lisa Bradshaw visits Het Firmament in Mechelen, a place where enthusiasts keep alive the art of puppet theatre. We also profile Axel Vervoordt, an antique collector who first caught the public’s imagination when he renovated a cluster of old houses in central Antwerp. He now owns a castle filled with precious objects and a showroom in an old malting house. But he’s no recluse and every year opens his buildings to the public for a winter show. Our popular beer series continues this week with a visit to Het Anker brewery in the heart of Mechelen. The family brewery was almost a write-off when Charles Leclef took it over, but he has skillfully relaunched the business to ensure its survival into the 21st century.
