Sharon Light finds out the history of Antwerp’s Jews and maps out some of the places to go to find Jewish food specialities.
A strange wooden sculpture by the Belgian artist and furniture designer Arne Quinze was unveiled last week in the street outside the Flemish parliament. We sent our photographer down to capture the strange beauty of the structure.
In our business section, we investigate a new rage in Antwerp, where young job seekers are meeting cool employers at a disco job fair. We also examine recent measures by the Flemish government to stimulate the economy and a new proposal to fund the construction of wind turbines off the Flemish coast.
For something off the beaten track, Lisa Bradshaw visits Het Firmament in Mechelen, a place where enthusiasts keep alive the art of puppet theatre. We also profile Axel Vervoordt, an antique collector who first caught the public’s imagination when he renovated a cluster of old houses in central Antwerp. He now owns a castle filled with precious objects and a showroom in an old malting house. But he’s no recluse and every year opens his buildings to the public for a winter show.
Our popular beer series continues this week with a visit to Het Anker brewery in the heart of Mechelen. The family brewery was almost a write-off when Charles Leclef took it over, but he has skillfully relaunched the business to ensure its survival into the 21st century.
We also have our regular column from Anja Otte, who explains the rise and fall of Flanders’ most famous spin doctor, and Alistair MacLean, who muses on the first word in the Dutch dictionary.
Derek Blyth

>From this Issue

You can also download the pdf document to read the latest news from Flanders Today
Download the pdf...

An enduring history - How Orthodox Jews arrived - and survived - in Antwerp

They are an inextricable part of central Antwerp. Step out of Central Station, count to 10, and you’re sure to have seen a man in a black coat, black hat and long sidelocks bike past. Members of the ultra-orthodox Jewish community of Antwerp make their home just a stone’s throw from the station, where you’ll find synagogues and yeshivot (houses of Jewish study) aplenty. But like any community, Judaism in Antwerp has not always looked like this. In a space inside the Hof van Busleyden museum, these figures made of wood, cloth, paint and paper-mâché come alive in such an enchanting variety of forms, the word “puppet” seems too simple to describe them.
Good afternoon

I am trying to find descendents of Jean Pierre Richette, born in Luxembourg,
who was known to have lived in Lieges in the late 1940s/early 1950s. He was
born c. 1902 and his last known address was 69 Quai St Leonard. I believe
he was a wine importer, but if not was certainly in the wine business.

Any help in directing me to appropriate sources for further research will be
gratefully received.

Thank you.

Felicity Pine.

This little > calculator converts dates betweeen most of the common calendars, including > the the French Republican Calendar, and will also calculate differences > between dates so that you can work out ages or even date of birth from date > of death minus age. The > original birth record should indicate which year in the French Republic > Calendar (often using roman numerals).> > Other's have suggested download/install software (They assume a Windows > machine); but there are several websites that will do the same > conversion. Here's one of them:> > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Republican_Calendar> > Scroll down until you see the current "month"; underneath you'll see the > Roman Numerals (I - XIV); click the one found in your birth record.> > Here's another:> > http://users.telenet.be/rita.van.isveldt/genealogy/kalender/> > Frank> > > ------------------------------> > Message: 4> Date: Mon, 03 Nov 2008 07:15:41 -0500> From: Michael Christiaens <mccsc@verizon.net>> Subject: [BEL-R] French Republican calendar convertor> To: BELGIUM-ROOTS-L <BELGIUM-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com>> Message-ID: <490EEB6D.8010504@verizon.net>> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed> > To the person asking about the French Republican calendar:> > Here is the handiest calendar convertor that I have found.> http://users.telenet.be/rita.van.isveldt/genealogy/kalender/> > The year 1805 is l'an _XIII_ [year 13].
