<title>[BIFHS-USA-NEWS] Holiday Potluck and family history sharing, Sunday 25 Nov. 1:00 PM</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BIFHS-USA-NEWS/2008-11/1227244791</link>
<description>The next meeting of the British Isles Family &#x3C;BR&#x3E;History Society &#x96; U. S. A. will be this Sunday, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;23 November 2008 at 1 PM at the Los Angeles &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Regional Family History Center, 10741 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This is a very special program that we only do &#x3C;BR&#x3E;once a year.  &#x93;SHARING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY &#x3C;BR&#x3E;EXPERIENCES.&#x94;  Our speaker, of course, will be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;YOU.  Tell us about your genealogical successes &#x3C;BR&#x3E;or experiences.  Over the past years, we have &#x3C;BR&#x3E;seen wonderful family photos, documents, quilts, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;candlestick holders, and many other items.  If &#x3C;BR&#x3E;you have a recent (or not so recent) research &#x3C;BR&#x3E;success story, by all means, tell us about &#x3C;BR&#x3E;it.  Who knows, you may end up meeting a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;long-lost cousin!  Or you may help someone else &#x3C;BR&#x3E;with their research.  That&#x27;s the fun of these &#x3C;BR&#x3E;meetings &#x96; you don&#x27;t know what you are going to hear or see.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This is also our HOLIDAY POTLUCK lunch.  Please &#x3C;BR&#x3E;bring a dish &#x96; hot or cold &#x96; and it can be from &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the country of your origin.  BIFHS-USA will &#x3C;BR&#x3E;supply the beverages and paper products. Fill &#x3C;BR&#x3E;your plates full with good food and come and sit &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and listen to family history experiences.  And &#x3C;BR&#x3E;you can always go back for seconds.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This is also election-time, so please bring your &#x3C;BR&#x3E;ballot to the meeting, if you haven&#x27;t already mailed it.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I&#x27;m looking forward to seeing you.  If you are &#x3C;BR&#x3E;brand new, please introduce yourself to me or to &#x3C;BR&#x3E;any of our other Board Members.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Okay, the date is this Sunday, 23 November 2008 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;at 1 PM at the Los Angeles Regional Family &#x3C;BR&#x3E;History Center, 10741 Santa Monica Blvd., West &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Los Angeles, CA.  Be aware, for you newcomers, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;that the Family History Center is NOT on Santa &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Monica Blvd., but behind the Mormon Temple.  For &#x3C;BR&#x3E;directions, see our web page &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bifhsusa/fhcwhere.html. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;We&#x27;re looking forward to seeing you.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Happy Holidays!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Annie Lloyd &#x3C;cardi2@aol.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;First Vice President, Program Chair&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[BIFHS-USA-NEWS] Sunday 26 October, Welsh patronymics + English Study Group</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BIFHS-USA-NEWS/2008-10/1224735968</link>
<description>The British Isles Family History Society - U. S. A. meets this coming &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Sunday, 26 October 2008 at the Los Angeles Regional Family History &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Center. Time: 1:00 PM.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;George P. Coulter will be our speaker and the topic will be: &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x22;Patronymics: Blessing or Curse?: Using Welsh patronymics to trace &#x3C;BR&#x3E;ancestry to the 16th century and beyond.&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;This presentation deals with the nature and use of Welsh patronymics &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and epithets in the days before fixed surnames began to be adopted &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and used in Wales. To keep track of their pedigrees, the early Welsh &#x3C;BR&#x3E;used patronymics in lieu of fixed surnames.  The pedigrees could be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;recited by family members and bards long before there were written &#x3C;BR&#x3E;records in the land. Coulter will demonstrate how the ancient &#x3C;BR&#x3E;patronymic pedigrees can be located and how patronymics and epithets &#x3C;BR&#x3E;(additional descriptive words, akin to nicknames, that often were &#x3C;BR&#x3E;attached to a Welshman&#x27;s name) can be used in genealogical research, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;sometimes allowing one&#x27;s Welsh ancestry to be established back to a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;time long before the 16th century. Patronymics are not necessarily a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;stumbling block but can be a stepping stone.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;At 3:30 PM, Peggy Wishon will give Part two of her &#x22;Expecting the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Unexpected:  How an Open Mind and Sheer Tenacity Helps in Tracing &#x3C;BR&#x3E;English Ancestry&#x22;.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;For directions in how to get to the Los Angeles Regional Family &#x3C;BR&#x3E;History Center, please see our website.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thank you,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Annie Lloyd  &#x3C;cardi2@aol.com&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;First Vice President - Program Chair&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
