<title>[BORDER] Church &#x22;Marriage&#x22; registers in Scotland</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BORDER/2008-12/1228928868</link>
<description>Having seen discussion about &#x22;marriage&#x22; registers, can I point out that &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Church of Scotland &#x22;marriage&#x22; registers were not that at all! The law &#x3C;BR&#x3E;required that banns be proclaimed in the parish of the parties to be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;married, and if they belonged to different parishes, the banns were &#x3C;BR&#x3E;called in both parishes. The Register was in fact a register of the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;BANNS of marriage being called, and that is why with the indexes there &#x3C;BR&#x3E;is confusion about the dates.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Banns were called on three occasions. The law intended this to be on &#x3C;BR&#x3E;three consecutive Sundays, but often the banns were declared three times &#x3C;BR&#x3E;on one day (easy if you have three services on a Sunday). The actual &#x3C;BR&#x3E;marriage date may also be recorded in the register (usually with the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;words &#x22;and were married (date)&#x22;, but often this was not done. So the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;dates appearing in the indexes as &#x22;marriages&#x22; are usually the first date &#x3C;BR&#x3E;of the banns being called. Only be examining the OPR entry can you &#x3C;BR&#x3E;determine what the date given in the index actually signified.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;On the same tack, where you find a marriage entry but no children to the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;couple in the indexes, this often indicated that the couple either &#x3C;BR&#x3E;belonged to another denomination or to none. The law stipulated that the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;banns be declared in the Church of Scotland parish church, but this &#x3C;BR&#x3E;applied to non-members as well. This is most noticeable in the period &#x3C;BR&#x3E;1843-1854: From the start of the Free Church to the start of Civil &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Registration in 1855.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Best wishes to all.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Gordon Johnson.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Dear List&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks to everybody who provided advice on Gideon Browns and Ann Thorburns marriages.  I have the copies of the original pages from the Scottish Records office website and they are church accounts rather than &#x22;true&#x22; records of marriage and as Prue pointed out they are probably the fees paid for the Banns to be read out in each of their parishes.  The dates are about a year apart  but the money could have been paid at any time.  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks again for all your advice&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Gavin&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
