I come from a long line of tide waiters, pilots, coast guards, and master mariners from Devon. My great-great-grandfather was born in 1837, he was a "captain" and died when his ship went down on 6 Jan 1895. His funeral cards, grave stone, and all references used in regards to him are "captain". So it was used much earlier than WW1. Do you have her name, when and where build? One very useful site is http://library.mysticseaport.org/initiative/VMSearch2.cfm for ships and their Masterts, but this depends on the ship having visited, or planned to visit, the U.S. Would you like to tell us more about the person you are asking about? There are lots of archives available, but not online, and usually that Official Number is required for ships and their crew lists. If you have access to Ancestry, you can look for British subjects abroard on their ship during Census day, and the following is a reply I made previously to an eanuirer who was searching for a ship's Master. If you don't have access to Ancestry, many local libraries in the UI.K. have it, freely accessible: If you have access to Ancestry (sometimes freely available in libraries) you can search for names of people on their ships looking under: Civil Parish: Vessels It's location will be given under town but if at sea, this may be an area such as 'Baltic', or a fishing bank or similar.
