Hi Chris, now you have me curious. I come from a long line of tide waiters, pilots, coast guards, and master mariners from Devon. My great-great-grandfather was born in 1837, he was a "captain" and died when his ship went down on 6 Jan 1895. His funeral cards, grave stone, and all references used in regards to him are "captain". So it was used much earlier than WW1.

Jan

--- On Wed, 1/7/09, Chris Woods <chris.woods45@tiscali.co.uk> wrote:

From: Chris Woods <chris.woods45@tiscali.co.uk>
Subject: Re: [British Mariners] 'Captains' Register
To: janetv99@yahoo.com, british-mariners@rootsweb.com
Date: Wednesday, January 7, 2009, 6:58 AM

I hope Lloyds are going to add the initial 'S' soon, and include all those Smith

Worth mentioning, of course, is that there never has been a legal position of Captain on a British merchant ship - they were, and still are, Master of the ship.

The title 'captain' is honorific, granted by the Royal Navy after WW1 etc.
Chris
Master - ret'd.

PLEASE NOTE:
To contact the List Admin privately, or to find other useful information to help you use the list more effectively please click on the following link:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Occupations/BRITISH-MARINERS.html
-------------------------------
To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BRITISH-MARINERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No virus found in this incoming message.
Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com
Version: 8.0.176 / Virus Database: 270.10.3/1877 - Release Date: 05/01/2009 19:20

Ann,

So many variable, but usually for ship search you will need the individual
ship's Official Number. Do you have her name, when and where build?

One very useful site is

http://library.mysticseaport.org/initiative/VMSearch2.cfm

for ships and their Masterts, but this depends on the ship having visited,
or planned to visit, the U.S.

Would you like to tell us more about the person you are asking about?
There are lots of archives available, but not online, and usually that
Official Number is required for ships and their crew lists.

If you have access to Ancestry, you can look for British subjects abroard
on their ship during Census day, and the following is a reply I made
previously to an eanuirer who was searching for a ship's Master. If you
don't have access to Ancestry, many local libraries in the UI.K. have it,
freely accessible:

If you have access to Ancestry (sometimes freely available in libraries)
you can search for names of people on their ships looking under:

Civil Parish: Vessels

It's location will be given under town but if at sea, this may be an area
such as 'Baltic', or a fishing bank or similar.

Another search option on Ancestry is to try:

Country/Island: Misc. ships at sea or abroard

and

Registration district: Misc Ships

Sub-registration district: Misc Ships

ED, institution, or vessel: name of ship

If you can track him down this way, it is then, with a ship's name,
possible to track his maritime career through the archives in Newfoundland
where 80% of the British Registrar of Ships and Seamen records are archived
(the other 20% are at Greenwich).

http://www.mun.ca/mha/index.php offerfine reseach guides and would be my
first port of call,

and

http://www.port.nmm.ac.uk/research/c8.html
http://www.port.nmm.ac.uk/research/c2.html
and
http://www.port.nmm.ac.uk/research/h3.html Lloyd's list of Captains!

If you are sure he sailed as Master (Captain) other sourses include:

guides include
http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/searchcrew.php
http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UKLogs,CrewLists.html
http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UK19thCSeamen.html

Chris

----- Original Message -----
From: <Anndriscoll@aol.com>
To: <british-mariners-L@rootsweb.com>
Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 8:54 PM
Subject: [British Mariners] Captains Register

> Hi list, would someone please tell me if there are any records online of
> British Mariners than can be searched by name, and or ship, and
> timeframe?
>
> Thanks
>
> Ann
> PLEASE NOTE:
> To contact the List Admin privately, or to find other useful information
> to help you use the list more effectively please click on the following
> link:
> -------------------------------
> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to
> BRITISH-MARINERS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without
> the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No virus found in this incoming message.
Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com
Version: 8.0.176 / Virus Database: 270.10.3/1877 - Release Date: 05/01/2009
19:20
