<description>MMMMMMMMM, Mallomars!!! Loved them as a kid in NY, and even into adulthood.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I used to eat each part separately, biting off the chocolate first, then&#x3C;BR&#x3E;gulping down the marshmallow, and finally crunching into the cookie. Also&#x3C;BR&#x3E;ate peanut butter cups that way, and still do sometimes.Kinda like what I&#x3C;BR&#x3E;did with Wonder Bread. I&#x27;d eat the crust first, and then the soft inside.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Hope I&#x27;m not the only one who did that.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Thanks for the info, Howie. Hope all is well with you.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Joanne in DC&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>MALLOMARS ... currently sold at Super Walmart for $2.89 a box.  I&#x27;ve been buying them for some time now ... the box is the same as it always was and so is the cookie.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Refrigerate them and the chocolate will &#x27;crunch&#x27; when you bite it.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Yum&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;-------------- Original message from Howie &#x3C;howie@pobox.com&#x3E;: -------------- &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Alternate subject: Seek and ye shall be overwhelmed &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; At Thanksgiving, my mom surprised us with a box &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; of Mallomars. As a kid I adored Mallomars, but &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; after high school, and hence after leaving The &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Bronx, they became memories. (Actually, my &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; memory is becoming a memory, but let&#x27;s not go &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; there.) I was completely surprised that they &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; were every bit as good as I remembered &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; them! There&#x27;s text on the box, which says, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x22;Mallomars were created by Nabisco in 1913 and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; first sold to a grocer in West Hoboken, NJ. The &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; metropolitan New York City area boasts the most &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; loyal Mallomars fans. More than 70% of all &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Mallomars sales are generated in the shadow of the Big Apple.&#x22; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; So, Mallomars are 95 years old. I thought it &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; would be interesting to find out more of their history. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; My first stop was Wikipedia: &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate-coated_marshmallow_treats &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; and, oh my! They&#x27;ve been made in Denmark for, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; oh, 200 years, and many countries have their own &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; versions. In the UK, they&#x27;re teacakes, in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Denmark they&#x27;re fl&#xC3;&#xB8;debolle , in Israel they&#x27;re &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Krembos, and the list goes on with many formerly offensive names updated. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; There&#x27;s a fascinating food timeline at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; http://www.foodtimeline.org/ which begins waaaayyy back. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; There&#x27;s a fine article in the New York Times &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; here: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/08/nyregion/08cookie.html?_r=1&#x26;8hpib &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; A Mallomars memory at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; http://archive.salon.com/mwt/sust/2001/02/27/mallomars/print.html &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; You can find out from Nabisco where the nearest &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Mallomars seller is at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; http://www.nabiscoworld.com/Brands/ProductInformation.aspx?BrandKey=mallomars&#x26;Si &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; te=1&#x26;Product=4400000674 &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; if you&#x27;re willing to register with them. I thought it &#x3C;BR&#x3E;would be interesting to find out more of their history.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;My first stop was Wikipedia: &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate-coated_marshmallow_treats &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and, oh my!  They&#x27;ve been made in Denmark for, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;oh, 200 years, and many countries have their own &#x3C;BR&#x3E;versions.  In the UK, they&#x27;re teacakes, in &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Denmark they&#x27;re fl&#xF8;debolle , in Israel they&#x27;re &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Krembos, and the list goes on with many formerly offensive names updated.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;There&#x27;s a fascinating food timeline at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.foodtimeline.org/ which begins waaaayyy back.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;There&#x27;s a fine article in the New York Times &#x3C;BR&#x3E;here: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/08/nyregion/08cookie.html?_r=1&#x26;8hpib&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;A Mallomars memory at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://archive.salon.com/mwt/sust/2001/02/27/mallomars/print.html&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;You can find out from Nabisco where the nearest &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Mallomars seller is at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.nabiscoworld.com/Brands/ProductInformation.aspx?BrandKey=mallomars&#x26;Site=1&#x26;Product=4400000674&#x3C;BR&#x3E;if you&#x27;re willing to register with them.  I wasn&#x27;t.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;You can also get them from Amazon: &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.amazon.com/NABISCO-MALLOMAR-COOKIES-6-CT/dp/B0002QF27I&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;An article at Extreme Chocolate: &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.extremechocolate.com/mallomars-why-many-chocoholics-cant-wait-until-october.html &#x3C;BR&#x3E;(a site I MUST return to).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;They&#x27;re known in Texas: &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.texasescapes.com/MaggieVanOstrand/The-Mallomar.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Musings on Mallomars marketing: &#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://gershkuntzman.homestead.com/files/The_Cookie_Crumbles.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;image removed&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;(I think the listserv strips out images.  If so, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;just imagine the top of a Mallomars package just above.)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;There area a bunch of other links, and you can &#x3C;BR&#x3E;google them too, but I need to return to my (sigh) job search.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;-Howie&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<title>[BRONXROOTS] Happy Evacuation Day</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BRONXROOTS/2008-11/1227460672</link>
<description>Tuesday, November 25, is the 225th Anniversary of Evacuation Day.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Now almost forgotten, Evacuation Day, especially in the NYC area, was &#x3C;BR&#x3E;celebrated as a holiday long before the Fourth of July:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;On November 25, 1783, the British Army boarded their naval vessels and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;evacuated New York City (then only coterminous with New York County), their wartime &#x3C;BR&#x3E;headquarters and their last military position* in the United States during the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Revolutionary War.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;As the British sailed away south in retreat through the Narrows separating &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Staten Island on the west and Long Island on the east, the last thing they saw, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;as their ships sunk below the horizon, was the Flag of the United States of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;America flying atop the Liberty Pole (an extended flag pole) in the frontyard of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the Dutch Reformed Church in the Hamlet of New Utrecht, Town of New Utrecht, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;in the south-central part of Kings County.  Today this location is at &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Christopher Columbus Boulevard (18th Avenue) and Liberty Pole Boulevard (84th Street) &#x3C;BR&#x3E;in the Bensonhurst neighborhood in the south-central part of the New York City &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Borough of Brooklyn. (The NYC Borough of Brooklyn is coterminous with the NYS &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Kings County).&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Replaced six times over the years, the 106&#x27; Liberty Pole is the last &#x3C;BR&#x3E;remaining Liberty Pole in the original thirteen United States.  On top of the Pole is &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the original eagle and weathervane. The eagle is made of wood and has a 5&#x27; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;wingspan. After two hundred and twenty-five years, the weather has weakened it &#x3C;BR&#x3E;considerably and it has been reinforced with iron bands.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;The eagle has looked over the bay and seen many sailing vessels, steamships &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and war ships. It has been said that the eyes of this golden eagle has looked &#x3C;BR&#x3E;upon more change in the world&#x27;s history than occurred from the days of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Nebuchadnezzar to the day when the eagle was raised.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Here&#x27;s the URL for the New Utrecht Liberty Pole Association:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.historicnewutrecht.org/LPA.html&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Here&#x27;s the URL for the Dutch Reformed Church (celebrated its 330th &#x3C;BR&#x3E;anniversary on Saturday, October 27, 2007):&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.newutrechtchurch.org/&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;New Yorkers celebrated November 25 as Evacuation Day for well over a century. &#x3C;BR&#x3E;But, with the warming of relations with England immediately preceding World &#x3C;BR&#x3E;War I and R. H. Macy&#x27;s publicity campaigns for a parade celebrating another &#x3C;BR&#x3E;late November festival, Evacuation Day celebrations faded away.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Regards,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Walter Greenspan&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Great Falls, MT &#x26; Jericho, NY&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;* Although the Treaty of Paris of 1783 said that Britain would evacuate all &#x3C;BR&#x3E;posts within the new United States, they did not. Scattered posts from &#x3C;BR&#x3E;present-day Vermont to present-day Michigan remained in British hands until Jay&#x27;s &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Treaty of 1795. Niagara was one of these British held forts on U. S. soil.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;/HTML&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;
