<title>Re: [BRUNER] The many ADAM BRUNERs</title>
<link>http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/BRUNER/2007-11/1196183064</link>
<description>Hi, all!&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;I too am descended from this &#x22;Adam&#x22; through his son George  (1777-1834).  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;There is much I have found regarding the stories and names of  his parents.  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Unfortunately, none of this is confirmed.  It is assumed  the father was &#x22;Adam&#x22; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;based on naming tradition.  Also, it is assumed the  &#x22;Widow&#x22; Bruner was Mary, &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and there are several assumptions being her name being  Mary Stewart, Mary &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Oates, Mary Faulkner.  None of this I have found  confirmed.  Mary Faulkner &#x3C;BR&#x3E;evidently had a father named Adam, which  according to tradition and i&#x27;ve heard of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;two, that Susannah, George, Adam and  Henry were named: George by his father&#x27;s &#x3C;BR&#x3E;father, Adam, by his mother&#x27;s  father.  I know this doesn&#x27;t help, but our Essex &#x3C;BR&#x3E;County line seems to be  all running around in circles with all these &#x3C;BR&#x3E;stories.  It is also legend  that George&#x27;s father (assumed to be Adam) was a &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Revolutionary War vet.  If  in fact his name was Adam, which you can&#x27;t believe that &#x3C;BR&#x3E;and that he was killed  by Indians before the family came to Canada.  This Adam &#x3C;BR&#x3E;I have found (I  believe if I remember off the top of my head), lived until &#x3C;BR&#x3E;the 1840&#x27;s and buried  in Illinois.  By that time George had passed away after &#x3C;BR&#x3E;living most his  life in Cedar Creek area (Kingsville, Ontario, Canada) and &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Olinda (Gosfield  South) and is buried in the Baptist Cemetery in Olinda in Essex &#x3C;BR&#x3E;County (Ontario,  Canada).  This fact would not confirm he was killed by &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Indians.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;If anyone has any confirmation of any of these facts, besides the  Tofflemire &#x3C;BR&#x3E;book, or Violet Charlotte Kluge Goold&#x27;s books, please let me  know.  &#x3C;BR&#x3E;According to the author of the Tofflemire book (George&#x27;s wife was  Elizabeth &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Tofflemire and his brother Adam married a Mary Tofflemire-Banks), she  has basically &#x3C;BR&#x3E;taken her material on the Bruners from the Bruner researchers, and  as i&#x27;ve &#x3C;BR&#x3E;said, it is all based on what I call &#x22;legends&#x22;.&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Paul J. Hawkins, Jr.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Essex, Ontario, Canada&#x3C;BR&#x3E; &#x3C;BR&#x3E;There is NO &#x22;I&#x22; in  teamwork&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;   &#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

Generally accepted&#x22; by&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; generations as German, I have discovered that Bruner is not a typical&#x3C;BR&#x3E;German&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; name but very common in Switzerland and many Swiss Bruners also came to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; America. Most Bruners from Germany are thought to have been driven into&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Germany because of religious persecution in Switzerland. They then&#x3C;BR&#x3E;emigrated&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; to America for both religious and economic reasons.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; (Question:  Is the Bruner surname German or Swiss?)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Bruners are known to have been brought over to the Mohawk Valley in New&#x3C;BR&#x3E;York&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; by Queen Anne of England. Because of harsh conditions there, they&#x3C;BR&#x3E;emigrated&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; to Berks Co., Pennsylvania; and later influxes of immigrants brought many&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; more into the Pennsylvania area before the Revolutionary War. It is from&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; some part of this pre-Revolutionary War group that we are descended.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; When I first started researching, I contacted Isabella Coy Smith of&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Eugene,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Oregon. She gave me my first &#x22;old&#x22; information.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; &#x22;Adam Bruner, with 3 brothers, came to America from Alsace- Lorraine. One&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; brother is reported to have remained in Pennsylvania, one went to Kentucky&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; and settled Brunertown, one settled in Bloomington, Illinois, and Adam&#x27;s&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; family went to Canada.&#x22; It is unknown if Adam was killed by Indians in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Pennsylvania just before or after starting to Canada.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; (Question:  Does anyone else tie in with Adam?  Who were the &#x22;three&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; brothers&#x22;?  I did contact the Kentucky State Historical Society and made&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; inquiry about the founding of Brunertown.   According to the person I&#x3C;BR&#x3E;talked&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; to the brother who founded Brunertown eventually left and moved to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Indiana,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; not Illinois.  Does anyone have any evidence that would back either&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; location?? )&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Isabella said she couldn&#x27;t find a Brunertown in Kentucky. I investigated,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; and through the Filson Club in Louisville, I found that Brunertown was&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; settled by Abraham Bruner. It later became Jeffersontown in Jefferson Co.,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Kentucky, not far from Louisville. The brother settled near Bloomington,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Illinois, I have not pursued.  After 2 years of concentrated research in&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Pennsylvania, I have come up with only one thing to confirm--not&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; conclusively--the story of Adam&#x27;s being killed by Indians and anyone from&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Adam&#x27;s family going to Canada. On page 83 of &#x22;Peckinpaughs, Pickenpaughs,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Beckenboughs, Peckinpaks and Pickenpaughs&#x22;, a book written by Edwin T. and&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Atha Peckenpaugh Brace, we find this. &#x22;There was an Adam Bruner killed by&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; the Indians in Penna. whose wife and children went to Canada. This Adam&#x3C;BR&#x3E;was&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; a Revolutionary War veteran.&#x22; Contact with the authors revealed no source&#x3C;BR&#x3E;or&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; further information.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; (Question:  Has anyone found any information about Adam being in the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Revolutionary War, or being killed by Indians?)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Isabella also wrote that Adam Bruner and wife Mary Stewart were the&#x3C;BR&#x3E;parents&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; of the Bruners who settled in Essex Co., Ontario, at that time Hesse&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; District of Upper Canada. I accept this for lack of any proof it isn&#x27;t&#x3C;BR&#x3E;true&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; as it agrees with family tradition. There is presently a controversy as to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; its accuracy. Sally Fox Smit of Wabasha, Minn., says, &#x22;I do not believe&#x3C;BR&#x3E;that&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; the widow Bruner who married second James Stewart, was Mary Oates. Nor was&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; her husband Adam Bruner.&#x22; Her theory is &#x22;I have another land record&#x3C;BR&#x3E;showing&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; that Adam Faulkner of Lot H16 in Gosfield, on the lakeshore, deeded this&#x3C;BR&#x3E;lot&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; H16 to James Stewart in 1792 &#x27;on condition of a comfortable support during&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; his life.&#x27; This might indicate that Adam Faulkner was related to James&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Stewart or his wife. I choose to believe that Adam Faulkner was the father&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; of James Stewart&#x27;s wife, who was the widow Bruner, mother of George,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Susannah, Adam and Henry. Mrs. Bruner-Stewart&#x27;s son Adam, was probably&#x3C;BR&#x3E;named&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; for his maternal grandfather, Adam Faulkner. Lot 16 was granted to Adam&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Faulkner in 1787. The widow Bruner and her four children probably came to&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Essex County before 1787 with her father, and likely she married James&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Stewart before 1792.&#x22;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; (Question:  Has anyone found any supporting information regarding Adam&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Bruner being married to &#x22;Mary Stewart&#x22;?  Of course, I have bunches of more&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; questions, but just thought I would start with these and see how things&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; worked out!  :&#x3C;)&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Thanks!&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E; Michael&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;

<description>Good day, List.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;One of the best documented researchers of the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Brun[n]er ancestry is Donald Lewis Osborn. He &#x3C;BR&#x3E;has written two incredible books on the early &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Brunners which includes extensive documentation &#x3C;BR&#x3E;on his direct line, Samuel Bruner [m. Catherine Briggs].&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Many libraries have his books:&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x22;Knowing the Bruners&#x22; pub. 1968, and Joseph &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Brunner of Rothenstein, Schifferstadt, and Frederick&#x22;, pub. 1991.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Most of the information listed below on early &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Brunners originates from these publication. If &#x3C;BR&#x3E;you can purchase these books, you would not be disappointed.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;In answer to Michael Barger&#x27;s query about the &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Bruner/Swiss connection, I found the following &#x3C;BR&#x3E;interesting coincidence. In the Swiss town of &#x3C;BR&#x3E;Gimmelwald, Lauterbrunnen Valley [not to be &#x3C;BR&#x3E;confused with Grindelwald], three family names &#x3C;BR&#x3E;have dominated for generations. One is Brunner. Our Brunner? Who knows?&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/switz/gimbd.htm&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Here follows a cut n&#x27; paste from my &#x3C;BR&#x3E;database. Sorry for the lack of formatting but &#x3C;BR&#x3E;you all know what happens in e-mail clients.&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Happy researching,&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Wood McCann&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Lincoln, CA&#x3C;BR&#x3E;wmccann@starstream.net&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;Descendants of Joseph BRUNNER&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;First Generation&#x3C;BR&#x3E;&#x3C;BR&#x3E;1.
